Bad Bunny’s Halftime Show Sparks Misidentification Controversy
During the Super Bowl halftime show, a moment involving Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny stirred significant social media speculation regarding the identity of a young boy he presented with a Grammy Award. Many users believed the child was Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old boy recently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota.
In the performance, Bad Bunny handed the award to a child with the inscription “Cree siempre en ti,” translating to “always believe in yourself.” This gesture captured attention online, with one user expressing, “BENITO GAVE HIS GRAMMY TO LIAM RAMOS? I didn’t even realize that was him I just thought it was like a little version of himself. MY HEART.”
However, a publicist for Bad Bunny clarified in a statement to NPR Music that the child was not Conejo Ramos but rather a child actor named Lincoln Fox. This clarification was later confirmed by People Magazine, which identified Fox as the young performer.
Reactions from Public Figures
The halftime show did not go unnoticed by former President Donald Trump, who openly criticized Bad Bunny’s performance on social media. On Truth Social, he stated, “The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence.” He further remarked that the lyrics were incomprehensible and deemed the choreography inappropriate for young viewers.
These comments were made against the backdrop of ongoing discussions regarding immigration policies and their societal impact. Earlier this year, the detention of Conejo Ramos led to widespread protests and public outcry, raising concerns about family separations during ICE operations.
The Department of Homeland Security explained that parents are given options regarding their children’s custody during such detentions. In a statement on X, the agency outlined, “Parents are asked if they want to be removed with their children, or ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates.”
Ongoing Immigration Concerns
Minnesota has seen heightened activism regarding immigration policies, particularly following incidents involving the use of force during protests. In January, two demonstrators were fatally shot while advocating against the administration’s immigration measures, prompting an FBI investigation into the events.
The controversy surrounding the Super Bowl halftime show reflects a broader societal discourse on immigration and representation. As discussions continue, the misidentification of the child during Bad Bunny’s performance underscores the intersections of culture, politics, and social justice in contemporary society.
