MLB Expands Media Reach with New Partnerships and Streaming Options
Major League Baseball (MLB) is embracing a transformative phase in its broadcasting strategy as it prepares for the 2026 season. The league has announced that the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels will join MLB Local Media as production partners, while ESPN will distribute MLB.TV for the first time, broadening access to baseball fans across North America.
Detroit Tigers Partner with MLB for Enhanced Broadcasting
Ilitch Sports + Entertainment has formed a partnership with MLB to provide comprehensive broadcast support for the Detroit Tigers starting in the 2026 season. This collaboration will offer fans in the Tigers’ home territories, which include all of Michigan, the ability to watch games and related content through a new platform. The details regarding cable and satellite providers, as well as direct-to-consumer streaming subscriptions, will be shared in the near future.
MLB will oversee the production and distribution of Tigers games, managing broadcast production, negotiating distribution agreements, and operating a direct-to-consumer streaming service. Following the 2025-26 NHL season, the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings will also transition into this partnership, with Ilitch Sports + Entertainment taking on broadcasting responsibilities for both teams. Coverage of the Red Wings on FanDuel Sports Network is expected to continue until the end of the current season.
Ryan Gustafson, President and CEO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, emphasized the importance of providing fans with consistent access to both Tigers and Red Wings games. “We have two of the top-rated broadcasts in our respective sports and remain focused on listening to fans about what matters most to them,” Gustafson stated. He highlighted the commitment to ensuring games are available across the market and delivering a reliable streaming product.
Los Angeles Angels Launch New Streaming Package
On the West Coast, the Los Angeles Angels have introduced a new Angels.TV seasonal package, enabling fans to stream regular-season games within the team’s home territory without facing blackouts, subject to national exclusivities. Priced at $99.99, this package aims to enhance accessibility for fans.
While the Angels have partnered with MLB for in-market, direct-to-consumer streaming, they are also contemplating the creation of their own linear regional sports network. Sources indicate that the decision to join MLB Local Media was influenced by time constraints, as the Angels co-own FanDuel Sports Network West. The team has been deliberating on a potential buyout of Main Street Sports Group to launch its own network.
MLB is rolling out in-market streaming subscriptions for 20 clubs, including the Angels. However, the Angels will not have their local games produced or distributed by MLB through a local regional sports network. Information regarding cable and satellite providers will be announced later, and fans can look forward to free streaming of Spring Training games as the team prepares for the season at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Subscription options for clubs under MLB Local Media have been set. The pricing for local streaming services remains consistent with last season at $99.99 per season or $19.99 per month. Fans can bundle a club’s local streaming service with an MLB.TV out-of-market subscription for $199.99 per season, resulting in a 20% savings compared to individual pricing.
Noah Garden, MLB Deputy Commissioner of Business & Media, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion of local media services. “We are pleased to continue expanding MLB’s local media services in 2026, ensuring that fans in each location will be able to enjoy another memorable baseball season on the platform of their choice,” Garden commented. He noted the focus on eliminating blackouts and enhancing viewer experiences through advanced production features.
MLB’s local productions have gained recognition for their innovative features, including live drones and specialized camera angles, creating an engaging viewing experience. The league has received Sports Emmy Awards for its local game production, underscoring its commitment to delivering high-quality broadcasts.
MLB.TV Now Available Through ESPN
In a significant development for baseball fans, MLB.TV is now available through ESPN, marking a new chapter in the longstanding partnership between the two organizations. This collaboration allows fans to access thousands of out-of-market live games each season through the ESPN App and ESPN.com.
Rosalyn Durant, Executive Vice President of ESPN Programming & Acquisitions, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “With MLB.TV now available through ESPN, we’re taking a significant step forward in reinforcing ESPN as the home of the MLB regular season while deepening the value proposition of the ESPN Unlimited plan,” Durant stated.
Fans can purchase MLB.TV through ESPN with various subscription options. Current ESPN Unlimited plan subscribers can access MLB.TV for $134.99 for the 2026 season, with renewals occurring at the current price. For those without an ESPN Unlimited plan, MLB.TV is available for $149.99 seasonally, which includes a complimentary month of ESPN Unlimited. Monthly subscription options are also available for $29.99, with new subscribers eligible for a free month of ESPN Unlimited.
Starting this season, MLB.TV subscribers in the U.S. will have the flexibility to watch games across both ESPN and MLB digital platforms, ensuring a comprehensive viewing experience. The enhanced features of the ESPN App will include multiview, integrated statistics, and real-time updates, further enriching the fan experience.
As MLB continues to evolve its media strategy, these partnerships and streaming options reflect a commitment to enhancing accessibility and engagement for fans, setting the stage for an exciting 2026 season.
