Greenville Native First to Serve as Chief Warrant Officer 5 in USAF

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jason E. Godwin has made history as the first actively serving CW5 in the history of the U.S. Air Force. A native of Greenville, Godwin transitioned from the U.S. Army Reserves to active duty, where he currently serves as an advisor to the Commandant at the Warrant Officer Training School (WOTS) located at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. In this vital role, he focuses on warrant officer development, policy matters, and the utilization of warrant officer candidates.

Godwin’s decision to transfer to the Air Force was influenced by the service’s commitment to enhancing its Warrant Officer Program. He previously held the position of Reserve Deputy Commandant at the Army’s Warrant Officer Career Academy, where he significantly contributed to curriculum development and training. His expertise in training and evaluation was crucial in the academy’s growth and the preparation of Tactical Officers. When the Air Force expressed interest in having a CW5 join their ranks, Godwin seized the opportunity.

Distinguished Military Journey

Godwin’s military career began in September 1999 when he enlisted in the Alabama Army Reserve National Guard as a UH-60 aircraft mechanic and crew chief. He earned his Warrant Officer rank in 2004 and subsequently completed flight training for the UH-60L aircraft. Over the years, Godwin has taken on numerous roles within the aviation branch, including serving as a Deputy Commandant at the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Career College and as Command Chief Warrant Officer for the 244th Engineer Company Aviation Battalion.

His operational experience includes deployments to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006 and 2008, where he served as a MEDEVAC pilot and a Tactical Operations Officer. He also participated in Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo in 2013 and was involved in Operation Inherent Resolve in 2018 as an instructor pilot. Throughout his career, Godwin has displayed versatility, holding various positions such as Maintenance Officer and Aviation Safety Officer among others.

Commitment to Education and Community

Godwin’s educational background is equally impressive. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, earning an Associate’s Degree in Aeronautics in 2020, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics with a Minor in Management in 2021. His qualifications also include an FAA Mechanic A&P Certificate, FAA CFI/CFII Certificate, and an FAA Airline Transport Pilot Helicopter Certificate, among other credentials.

Outside of his military commitments, Godwin co-owns All Occasions Creations Florists with his mother and wife in Greenville, Alabama, reflecting his dedication to both his family and community. He emphasizes that his faith and family are paramount in his life, stating, “God and my family are the most important things to me.”
