EUR/JPY Plummets to 181.00 as JPY Strengthens Amid Selling Pressure
UPDATE: The EUR/JPY currency pair has plunged to 181.00, marking its lowest point in over two months during the Asian session today, July 20, 2023. This sharp decline continues a four-day slide from the 186.25 level, driven by significant selling pressure and a robust Japanese Yen (JPY).
Market analysts report that the breakdown below critical support levels, particularly the 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) and the 183.00 horizontal support, has intensified bearish sentiment. Spot prices are currently down nearly 0.50% for the day and appear vulnerable to further declines as the JPY gains strength.
The 100-day SMA, now at 180.75, is emerging as a pivotal support point. A sustained breach below this level could signal deeper retracement, raising concerns among traders about potential further losses.
“A break beneath the 100-day SMA support would warn of a deeper retracement slide,” analysts state, emphasizing the critical nature of this support level.
The technical indicators are increasingly bearish. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram has turned negative, indicating that momentum is faltering. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently at 36, suggesting weakening momentum without entering oversold territory. A recovery through 50 on the RSI could provide a glimmer of hope for bulls, while a drop toward 30 would solidify sellers’ control.
In terms of broader currency strength, the Japanese Yen remains the top performer against major currencies this week, with notable gains against the US Dollar and Euro. The Yen has appreciated by 3.23% against the USD and 2.84% against the EUR, reflecting significant shifts in market sentiment.
Traders are now closely monitoring the next moves for the EUR/JPY pair. A daily close above the 50-day SMA could revive bullish momentum, while continued weakness could lead to further selling pressure.
As global markets respond to these developments, investors are urged to stay alert. The evolving situation with the EUR/JPY could have significant implications for currency trading strategies moving forward.
