UPDATE: In a stunning upset, No. 1 Arizona suffered its second consecutive defeat, falling to No. 16 Texas Tech 78-75 in overtime on February 10, 2024. The Wildcats, previously undefeated at 23-0, now face critical questions as they drop to 23-2 and 10-2 in the conference.

Texas Tech (19-6, 9-3 Big 12) showcased a powerful performance with JT Toppin leading the charge, scoring 31 points and netting eight crucial points in overtime. This victory marks the third time in school history that Texas Tech has defeated a No. 1 ranked team.

The game unfolded dramatically, with Arizona holding a 64-57 lead with just over three minutes left in regulation. However, a fierce 9-0 run by Texas Tech, capped by a timely 3-pointer from Donovan Atwell, flipped the score to 66-64 in favor of the Red Raiders. Arizona’s Ivan Kharchenkov managed to tie the game at 66 with two free throws, but a contested shot from Christian Anderson missed as time expired.

In the overtime period, Toppin dominated the court, executing a series of tip-ins and low-post moves to secure the win for Texas Tech. He shot an impressive 13-of-22 from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds, marking the 47th double-double of his career. Anderson contributed significantly with 19 points, including six 3-pointers.

Arizona faced additional challenges as they were without star freshman Koa Peat in the second half due to a lower-body injury. Peat had only managed 2 points and a rebound in the first half. Furthermore, backup guard Dwayne Aristode was sidelined with an illness, leaving coach Tommy Lloyd with a severely limited rotation of just six players.

The Wildcats initially led for much of the first half, but Texas Tech’s aggressive play shifted the momentum, leading to a tied score of 32 at halftime.

As the fallout from this shocking defeat continues, all eyes will be on Arizona as they prepare for their next matchup. Fans are left wondering if the Wildcats can bounce back and regain their top ranking, or if this is the start of a troubling downward trend. The implications for NCAA tournament positioning are significant, making their upcoming games critical.

Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds.
