Surf Legend Kurt Van Dyke Killed in Armed Intrusion in Costa Rica

UPDATE: Surf legend Kurt Van Dyke, aged 66, was tragically killed in his home in Cahuita, Costa Rica, during a violent intrusion by armed assailants on July 15, 2023. The incident has sent shockwaves through the surfing community and raised serious concerns over safety in the region.

According to reports, Van Dyke was attacked by two armed intruders who broke into his apartment, where he lived with his girlfriend, identified only as Arroyo. The couple was tied up and held captive for several minutes before the intruders assaulted Van Dyke and fled with valuables, including a vehicle. Authorities discovered his body later, concealed under a bed with signs of asphyxiation and multiple stab wounds.

“My brother was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody,” stated Peter Van Dyke, Kurt’s brother, in a heartfelt message. “Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him.” This tragic event marks an unprecedented act of violence in a typically peaceful area known for its low crime rates.

Van Dyke was the owner of Hotel Puerto Viejo, a well-regarded hostel located just a short drive from his home. The region, part of the southern Limón province, has generally been safe, with crime limited to petty offenses. “We have the Police delegation in Playa Negra, the cantonal, which is the most modern in the country,” said Roger Sams, president of the Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. “This shocks us and hurts us because the Caribbean has been very calm.” He emphasized that this incident is isolated and not connected to tourist activities.

The crime reflects broader issues in the province, where organized crime and drug trafficking have been escalating. Homicides in Puerto Limón account for a staggering 25% of all homicides in Costa Rica, largely concentrated around the capital. However, the small beach towns have remained relatively untouched—until now.

Kurt Van Dyke, who began surfing at the tender age of 7, hailed from a renowned Santa Cruz family. His parents, Gene and Betty Van Dyke, were pioneers in both surfing and agriculture. The family has operated Van Dyke Ranch in Gilroy’s Gavilan Mountains for over 60 years.

In a poignant tribute, a friend of Van Dyke shared on social media, “We remember your spirit, your energy, and the light you brought into the lives around you. Some people leave footprints — you left waves.” This sentiment underscores the profound impact Van Dyke had on those who knew him.
