Confronting America’s Past: The Path to True Greatness
As the United States observes Black History Month 2026, discussions around the nation’s historical narrative have intensified. Critics argue that those advocating for a return to a perceived past greatness are simultaneously working to erase the significant contributions of people of color and downplay the enduring impact of slavery. The conversation about confronting historical injustices is crucial for any nation aspiring to greatness.
Many nations have faced their darker chapters head-on. In Germany, for instance, the legacy of Nazism serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of unchecked ideology. Modern Germans have taken deliberate steps to ensure that history is neither denied nor whitewashed. Laws prohibit the public denial or trivialization of the Holocaust, and memorials like the Memorial of the Murdered Jews of Europe stand as testaments to the past. In addition, Holocaust education is integrated into school curricula, ensuring that future generations recognize the horrors of that era. This process is encapsulated in the term Vergangenheitsbewältigung, which translates to “coming to terms with the past.”
In stark contrast, the United States grapples with its own historical contradictions. The nation was founded on ideals of freedom, yet it systematically denied that freedom to entire populations. While the Nazi regime lasted less than a decade, the legacy of slavery in the United States endured for centuries, culminating in a Civil War that remains one of the bloodiest in history. This disparity in how histories are confronted raises significant questions about the path to national greatness.
The consequences of this historical denial are evident in contemporary society. People of color in the United States continue to experience disparities in healthcare, housing, income, and education compared to their white counterparts. This inequality, rooted in the legacy of slavery, poses a significant barrier to achieving national greatness. Yet, it also presents an opportunity for moral leadership and growth, should the nation choose to confront and overcome these issues.
The teachings of the Baha’i faith emphasize that the United States is destined for leadership—not merely in material wealth but in spiritual guidance. However, this potential is contingent upon addressing long-standing racial issues. According to the Baha’i National governing body, racism impacts everyone in America, affecting both Black and White citizens. The publication, The Vision of Race Unity: America’s Most Challenging Issue, underscores that real change requires conscious, deliberate efforts and close associations among diverse communities.
As noted by writer Thomas Chatterton Williams, the narrative of slavery and its abolition reveals the resilience of human dignity. When told accurately, this narrative can foster reconciliation and help prevent future injustices. The call to action is clear: rather than erasing history, the focus should be on abolishing racism.
By embracing a truthful account of its past, the United States can begin to live up to its national motto, e pluribus unum—out of many, one. As the nation reflects on its history, the hope is that it will strive toward unity and recognition of its diverse heritage, ultimately laying the groundwork for a truly great society.
Nancy Flood-Golembeck, a retired teacher and devoted member of the Baha’i faith, advocates for this approach. In addition to her role on the local Baha’i governing body, she is currently authoring a memoir that aims to explore these themes further.
The dialogue surrounding these issues is vital for the future of the country. Support for independent journalism allows for ongoing discussions about the challenges and achievements within communities. Engaging with these topics paves the way for a more informed and united society.
