World War II Veteran LeRoy Forehand Passes Away at 101

LeRoy Forehand, a decorated World War II veteran and long-time resident of Torrance, California, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 7, 2026. He was 101 years old. Forehand’s legacy includes his military service and significant contributions to his community, reflecting a life dedicated to both country and family.

Early Life and Military Service

Born in Grinnell, Iowa, LeRoy moved to southern California in 1941, a decision that would shape his future significantly. He began his career at Lockheed Aircraft, working as an aircraft ordnance technician on the P-38 Lightning fighter planes. In August 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, joining the fight in the Pacific theater during World War II.

Forehand served as a Beach Master on Saipan in 1945, a critical role that involved coordinating the landing and supply operations during the island’s pivotal invasion. His bravery and dedication during the war earned him respect among his peers and a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by fellow service members.

A Lifelong Commitment to Community

After the war, LeRoy returned to southern California, where he continued to contribute to the aerospace industry, working at TRW and later at CALTRANS until his retirement. His commitment to serving others did not end there; he became an active member of the Gardena Masonic Lodge in 1960, achieving the office of Master.

Forehand’s involvement in veterans’ affairs was noteworthy. He participated in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for over 20 years, serving on the Honor Guard at Post 1622 in Lomita, California. He was also a supporter of the USS Iowa and regularly took part in the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade, demonstrating his pride in his military service and dedication to honoring veterans.

LeRoy is survived by his daughter, Ruth Ann Forehand, who continues to uphold the values he instilled in her.

Memorial Service and Celebration of Life

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a viewing scheduled for February 26 from 16:00 to 19:00 at Halverson, Stone and Myers Mortuary, located at 1223 Cravens Ave., Torrance. A memorial service will follow at the mortuary chapel on February 28 at 10:00. Following the service, LeRoy will be laid to rest at Green Hills Cemetery.

A celebration of life will be held post-interment at the Lomita VFW Post 1622, located at 1865 Lomita Blvd., where friends and family can gather to share memories and honor his remarkable life.
