Charlotte Journalism Collaborative Makes Waves at Knight Media Forum
Partners of the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative gathered last week in Miami for the 2026 Knight Media Forum, an event that emphasized the urgency of community journalism in protecting democratic freedoms. The forum, hosted by the Knight Foundation, served as both a celebration of local journalism and a stark reminder of the challenges faced by press freedom today.
This year’s forum was marked by an increased sense of urgency. As Maribel Pérez Wadsworth, President and CEO of the Knight Foundation, highlighted during her opening remarks, “Informed and engaged citizens are the engine of democracy.” The discussions brought together professionals from various sectors including business leaders, nonprofit organizations, and community advocates, all united by the belief that robust news ecosystems are crucial for healthy communities.
Key Themes and Insights from the Forum
Reflecting on the event, Hilda Gurdian, CEO of La Noticia, expressed that the forum provided invaluable networking opportunities and reinforced the crucial role of journalism in safeguarding democracy. Gurdian noted that the organizers successfully bridged the event’s democratic mission with the importance of the Latino community, a demographic that is rapidly growing in the United States. She emphasized the need for trusted journalism as the Latino population, now with a purchasing power of approximately $3.6 trillion, is vital to the nation’s media landscape.
The forum featured prominent voices in journalism, including Giovanna Torres, founder and executive director of Charlotte’s Cine Casual, and Mariana Robertson, general manager of KCAW Raven Radio in Alaska. Their stories underscored the resilience and hope embedded within local media. Torres shared an emotional narrative that resonated deeply with attendees, while Robertson’s declaration that “the future feels like it’s ours to build” echoed the collective optimism present throughout the event.
Navigating Challenges and Opportunities in Journalism
As the forum progressed, it became clear that the journalism industry is at a pivotal juncture. Discussions focused on the impact of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and the need for innovative business models to sustain local journalism. Ely Portillo, Executive Editor at WFAE 90.7 FM, noted that successful news organizations share common traits: a commitment to local issues, strong community ties, and a focus on in-depth, face-to-face reporting.
Despite the challenges, many Charlotte-based news organizations are well-positioned to thrive by embracing their unique identities as essential local news sources. The forum served as a rallying call for collective action, urging participants to prioritize the needs of their communities and to strengthen their journalism practices.
Through collaboration and shared experiences, the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative aims to enhance the region’s news landscape. Members include the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, The Charlotte Observer, James L. Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte, QCity Metro, Qnotes, and the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute. Together, they are committed to fostering an informed and engaged public.
The 2026 Knight Media Forum not only highlighted the challenges facing journalism but also celebrated the resilience and potential of local news organizations. As participants return to their communities, the focus remains clear: to ensure that journalism continues to serve as a cornerstone of democracy in an increasingly complex media environment.
