Delta Air Lines Unveils Shortest Domestic Routes in 2026
Delta Air Lines recently announced its plans to resume the operation of its longest domestic flight, connecting Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in Massachusetts with Honolulu International Airport (HNL) in Hawaii. This extensive route spans a remarkable 5,095 miles (8,200 km), surpassing the distance of many transatlantic flights. While these long-haul routes are significant, Delta’s operational strategy heavily relies on shorter feeder flights that facilitate access to its broader network from smaller airports.
Exploring the Shortest Routes
In February 2026, Delta’s shortest domestic passenger route measures a mere 74 miles (119 km). This route operates entirely within Michigan, connecting Capital Region International Airport (LAN) in Lansing to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). This corridor allows passengers to connect with Delta’s extensive range of domestic and international flights. Delta has scheduled a total of 78 flights in each direction for this route, serviced by regional jets from SkyWest Airlines’ Bombardier CRJ family. The block time for these flights is about 48 minutes.
Delta noted the importance of its Detroit hub, stating: “The Motor City is home to five Sky Clubs that provide customers with thoughtful amenities like an assortment of meal offerings, premium beverage selections, and intentionally crafted lounge space.”
Additionally, four other Delta routes fall under the 100-mile mark this month. The most frequently serviced is the 95-mile (153 km) route from Detroit to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), which will see 132 rotations. This service is split between 83 flights operated by SkyWest Airlines and 49 by Endeavor Air, both utilizing Bombardier CRJ series jets.
Another notable route is the 98-mile (158 km) flight from Detroit to MBS International Airport, which serves Midland, Bay City, and Saginaw. Delta plans 84 rotations on this route, all operated by SkyWest’s Bombardier CRJ jets, with flights taking approximately an hour.
The remaining two routes under 100 miles are both served 78 times in each direction. One connects Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Columbus (CSG) in Georgia, while the other links Minneapolis (MSP) with Rochester (RST). The Minneapolis route sees 51 rotations operated by Endeavor’s CRJs and 27 by SkyWest’s Embraer E175s.
Delta’s Mainline Shortest Route
Among the discussed routes, all Delta-marketed services are operated by regional partners under the Delta Connection brand. However, Delta also maintains a mainline service that qualifies as its shortest route, measuring 106 miles (171 km). This service connects Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) in Tennessee to Atlanta, utilizing the Boeing 717-200 aircraft. With a capacity of 12 first-class and 98 economy seats, this aircraft represents Delta’s second-smallest mainline option. The flights from CHA to ATL operate up to three times daily.
As Delta prepares to reintroduce its longest nonstop domestic route, the airline is also focused on maintaining a robust network of regional services that connect smaller markets to larger hubs. These short routes play a vital role in ensuring that passengers have convenient access to Delta’s comprehensive flight options.
