France Summons U.S. Ambassador Over Controversial Remarks
France has summoned U.S. Ambassador Charles Kusher in response to comments made by the Trump administration regarding the death of Quentin Deranque, a far-right activist. The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Sunday, signaling diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
The controversy stems from a statement issued by the U.S. State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau. The bureau referred to reports, corroborated by the French Minister of the Interior, indicating that Deranque was killed by left-wing militants. The statement expressed concern over the rise of “violent radical leftism” and emphasized the need to address this threat to public safety.
Deranque succumbed to brain injuries sustained during an altercation in Lyon last week. He was attacked during a fight that erupted on the fringes of a student meeting, where far-left lawmaker Rima Hassan was a keynote speaker. His death has intensified the existing political tensions in France, particularly with the presidential election approaching in 2024.
In a public address, President Emmanuel Macron called for calm as approximately 3,000 individuals participated in a march in Lyon, organized by far-right groups to honor Deranque. Barrot emphasized the need to avoid the political exploitation of this tragedy, stating, “We reject any instrumentalization of this tragedy, which has plunged a French family into mourning, for political ends.”
Seven individuals have faced preliminary charges related to Deranque’s death. The Lyon public prosecutor’s office has requested that each of the accused be charged with intentional homicide, aggravated violence, and criminal conspiracy. Six of the suspects received charges on all three counts, while the seventh was charged with complicity in those offenses.
Barrot also indicated that he plans to discuss additional matters with Kusher, including U.S. sanctions imposed on Thierry Breton, a former European Union commissioner, and Nicolas Guillou, a French judge at the International Criminal Court. Barrot described these sanctions as “unjustified and unjustifiable.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not disclose the date for the meeting with Kusher. This marks the second instance in which Kusher has been summoned by France. In August 2022, he was called in regarding a letter he sent to Macron, which accused France of failing to adequately combat antisemitism. In response to those allegations, the French government rejected the claims, asserting they contradicted international law and undermined the transatlantic partnership.
Macron addressed the issue during an appearance on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” emphasizing that Kusher’s public accusations were inappropriate for a diplomat. He stated, “A French ambassador would never be allowed to make similar public remarks about another country because it would risk diplomacy with those nations.”
The diplomatic rift illustrates not only the complexities of international relations but also the significant domestic issues facing France as it approaches a critical electoral period.
