At just 22 years old, Andrew Painter is on the brink of making his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies, a milestone he had anticipated three years earlier. In Clearwater, Florida, where the Phillies are conducting their spring training, Painter prepares to join the roster as he approaches his 23rd birthday on April 10, 2023. His agent, Scott Boras, expressed a desire for him not to pitch in the majors until turning 22, a strategy based on the belief that pitchers typically mature physically in their early twenties.

Reflecting on his early career aspirations, Painter recounted his initial meeting with Boras at 19 years old, eager to break into the league. “I was coming in, hoping to break in, so I’m sitting there like, ‘You want me to put some weight on? What do you want me to do?’” he recalled. Now, he is ready to fulfill those expectations.

Painter’s path has not been straightforward. After being recognized as the top minor league pitcher by Baseball America in 2022, he faced a two-year absence from competitive pitching due to a serious elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. This setback delayed his entry into the majors, but it also allowed him to refine his skills and recover fully.

The young pitcher made progress during spring training, showcasing his talent in the Grapefruit League. In a recent outing, he faced a challenging lineup that included notable players such as Kyle Schwarber and Justin Crawford. Schwarber commented on Painter’s performance, noting, “Overall I thought his stuff was really good. The fastball had some life.”

Despite facing difficulties adjusting his pitching mechanics, particularly after a two-year hiatus, Painter is committed to improving. He experienced challenges with his arm angle and fastball accuracy during his time in the minors, where hitters managed to hit .329 against his four-seamer. Painter acknowledged the need to reassess his techniques during the offseason, leading him to resume training focused on adjusting his arm slot.

“I didn’t want to mess with it in season,” Painter said, emphasizing the importance of consistency. His offseason training at Cressey Sports Performance has reinforced his technique, and he is optimistic that these adjustments will pay off in the upcoming season.

With the Phillies eager to integrate him into their rotation, team officials are excited about Painter’s potential. The organization had high hopes for him three years ago, believing he was ready to make his major league debut last year. But guys when they’re 19, you go out there, it’s almost like your body’s not ready. It can’t handle that load. So, yeah, I do think maybe this was all kind of a blessing in disguise,” he shared.
