Portland’s Foxtrot Bar Transforms Bathrooms into Artful Spaces
Nestled in the historic Queen Anne manor on Belmont Street, Portland’s cafe and cocktail bar, Foxtrot, has redefined the traditional bar experience. The establishment, which once housed the Pied Cow, has embraced an exceptionally domestic atmosphere that resonates with visitors. The bar’s unique approach transforms a simple night out into a warm gathering reminiscent of a family reunion.
One of the most striking features of Foxtrot is its bathroom, which owner Britain Stephens describes as resembling a grandmother’s vanity room taken to an extreme. This extraordinary space started with a collection of gold mirrors from the 1980s, evolving into a visually rich environment adorned with etched glass, decorative flowers, and birds. It features a double-stacked pedestal with an eye-catching ceiling lamp, creating an ambiance that is both nostalgic and modern.
The bathroom’s design reflects Stephens‘ vision of maximalism, where he aims to create a space that feels personal yet grand. He explains, “It’s just as if I was decorating my space, but maybe maximalizing.” This ongoing project has been in development since the bar opened over a year ago, with Stephens continuously adding new elements to the decor.
A Living Art Installation
Foxtrot’s bathroom is not merely a functional space; rather, it serves as an evolving art installation. Stephens considers it an “ongoing art project,” indicating that the bathroom’s transformation is far from complete. The continuous updates aim to surprise and delight patrons, ensuring that each visit offers something new to discover.
This innovative approach is indicative of a broader trend in Portland’s hospitality scene, where bars and cafes increasingly prioritize unique and engaging designs. As establishments like Foxtrot push the boundaries of traditional decor, they create spaces that foster a sense of community and comfort, inviting guests to linger longer.
The intersection of art and hospitality not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the overall experience of patrons. Visitors are encouraged to explore every corner of the bar, making each visit a memorable occasion.
As the city continues to evolve, establishments like Foxtrot showcase the potential for creativity in unexpected places. By transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences, Stephens and his team are setting a new standard for what it means to enjoy a night out in Portland.
This innovative approach to decor and atmosphere exemplifies how bars can become more than just places to drink; they can serve as vibrant hubs of social interaction and artistic expression. Foxtrot not only reflects this philosophy but also invites guests to participate in its ongoing transformation, making it a noteworthy destination in Portland’s diverse nightlife.
