Byron Storer Joins Browns as Special Teams Coordinator, A New Chapter
UPDATE: Byron Storer has officially been named the new special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, a significant career move announced on March 4, 2023. This transition marks a pivotal moment in Storer’s journey from managing his family’s transportation business back to his true passion: coaching.
Storer’s decision to leave the family business was not taken lightly. After spending over four years at Storer Transportation, he realized that his calling was in football. “Ultimately after about one or two years in the bus business, I was like, I knew that I wanted to be a coach,” Storer stated during his introductory press conference. This moment of clarity led him to reach out to Rich Bisaccia, his long-time mentor and respected special teams coach.
Storer’s journey in the NFL began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played as a fullback from 2007 to 2009. Injuries limited his playing time to just 25 games, but they opened the door to coaching. During his time on injured reserve, he began evaluating players and providing insights to Bisaccia, laying the groundwork for his coaching career.
Following his playing days, Storer quickly advanced through coaching ranks, serving as the assistant special teams coach for the Buccaneers before taking on a similar role with the San Diego Chargers. However, a call from his father lured him back to the family business after the Chargers’ playoff run ended in 2013.
After four years away, Storer returned to coaching when Bisaccia brought him back into the fold with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018. Storer followed Bisaccia to Green Bay in 2021, where he continued to develop his skills alongside a coaching legend.
What makes this hiring particularly compelling is Storer’s commitment to the Browns, despite having no prior connections to the franchise. “Cleveland’s where I want to be,” he emphasized, reflecting his excitement about the opportunity to build a new legacy.
Storer’s promotion comes at a critical time as the Browns aim to strengthen their special teams following a challenging season. The team’s decision underscores their confidence in Storer’s abilities and the potential he brings as a fresh voice in the coaching staff.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Storer will shape the Browns’ special teams strategy as the organization prepares for the upcoming season. With strong ties to Bisaccia and a wealth of experience, Storer is well-positioned to make an immediate impact.
As the Browns continue to build their team ahead of the season, Storer’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the unpredictable paths individuals take in professional sports. His story reflects a deep commitment to both family and passion for the game, making it a narrative worth following closely.
