130th Airlift Wing Returns Home After Successful Horn of Africa Mission
BREAKING: The 130th Airlift Wing has officially returned home to McLaughlin Air Base in Charleston, West Virginia, following a vital mission in the Horn of Africa. The first of several C-130 aircraft landed just moments ago, bringing relief and joy to families eagerly awaiting their loved ones.
Young children clad in ear protection gathered at the base, craning their necks to catch a glimpse of their returning heroes. Many of these families have endured long months apart, with some parents like Captain Mike Adler expressing heartfelt emotions: “There’s nothing like it, it makes their day, it makes our day. It’s been a long time. Happy to be home and it’s time to make up for some lost time for sure.”
The deployment, which began in November 2025, required the airmen to deliver essential supplies across multiple airfields in the Horn of Africa. Airman Thomas Staggs shared his experience while cradling his young son, saying, “I missed his first Christmas, but we planned one out and did it early before I left.”
Similarly, Ben Foster, who left just before Thanksgiving, was reunited with his son, now significantly heavier since his departure. “It’s great, he’s grown up a lot since I left him. He’s like 20 pounds heavier,” Foster noted, showcasing the emotional weight of family reunions.
This mission is particularly significant as it marks the first operational deployment of the C-130 J aircraft for the 130th Airlift Wing, a major upgrade from the older models that began in 2021. The Air Guard command has confirmed that the mission was a success, indicating the unit’s strategic enhancement and readiness for future operations.
As families embrace their loved ones, the broader implications of this successful mission resonate. The deployment not only provided vital support in a critical region but also reinforced the commitment of the West Virginia National Guard to serve and protect.
For now, the focus shifts to the homecoming celebrations, with families eager to reconnect and make up for lost time. Stay tuned for more updates as the 130th Airlift Wing begins its next chapter at home. This is a developing story.
