Power Restoration Efforts Underway in Western Cuba After Blackout
Western Cuba is grappling with the aftermath of a significant blackout that affected large swathes of the region on Wednesday, with power restoration efforts ongoing. The outage is attributed to a fragile electric grid and fuel shortages, leaving millions without electricity nearly a day later.
Restoration Efforts and Challenges
As of Thursday, nearly 660,000 customers in Havana had regained power, representing about 77% of the city’s electricity supply. However, the situation remains precarious. State media reported that while 43 hospitals and 10 water supply stations were operational, officials indicated that power generation was still low and that some circuits previously reconnected experienced outages again.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines stated on X that the electrical system is functioning “in a limited capacity,” prioritizing essential services such as health and water supply. Crews have been diligently working overnight to repair a broken boiler at one of Cuba’s largest thermoelectric plants, but officials caution that full restoration could take an additional three to four days.
Government officials confirmed that a crack in the boiler drum that caused the outage had been located, but repairs will require a cooling period of 12 hours before crews can safely access the furnace. Efforts to mend a damaged pipe are also underway.
Impact on Daily Life
The blackout has had a profound impact on residents. Miguel Leyva, aged 65, expressed his frustration, stating, “I have no words to describe what I’m going through: the heat, the mosquitoes and no electricity. The food could spoil.” Leyva lives with his mother and brother, both of whom are ill, making the lack of power particularly challenging.
Others are finding ways to cope. Sonia Vázquez, 61, managed to sell coffee to passersby using gas to prepare her brew under a rechargeable lamp early in the morning. “I didn’t sleep last night. Too many mosquitoes,” she remarked, highlighting the discomfort experienced by many.
Meanwhile, José Ignacio Dorta, who owns a cafe, reported that some of his frozen food has spoiled due to the power outage. “We’ve looked for ways to prevent further spoilage. We’re working on it. We hope nothing else will spoil,” he said, reflecting the urgency felt by local businesses.
Cuba’s ongoing power issues are rooted in its aging electric grid and intermittent fuel supplies. The situation has worsened recently, with key oil shipments from Venezuela disrupted following U.S. sanctions and geopolitical tensions. In early January, U.S. authorities halted deliveries, exacerbating the nation’s energy crisis.
During this turmoil, Former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested a potential deal with Cuba but emphasized his focus on other international issues, such as Iran. His comments included vague references to a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, although he did not elaborate on the specifics.
This blackout marks the second significant electrical failure in western Cuba within three months; a previous outage in early December lasted nearly 12 hours. Many of Cuba’s thermoelectric plants have been in operation for over three decades, suffering from insufficient maintenance due to cost constraints. U.S. sanctions have also limited the government’s ability to acquire new equipment and necessary parts.
As power restoration efforts continue, the situation remains fluid, with officials and citizens alike hoping for a swift resolution to the ongoing crisis.
