Dee-Mack Girls Basketball Claims Historic First State Title

The Deer Creek-Mackinaw girls basketball team celebrated a remarkable achievement on March 9, 2024, by winning their first-ever state championship. They triumphed over Mt. Pulaski with a score of 49-34 in the Class 1A finals held at CEFCU Arena. This victory marks a significant milestone for the program, culminating a season characterized by determination and teamwork.

Senior forward Dalia Dejesus played a pivotal role in the game, demonstrating her skills and leadership throughout the match. With 16 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and six blocks, she was instrumental in turning the tide in favor of Dee-Mack. “I was, honestly, just trying to take it all in,” Dejesus remarked, reflecting on her final moments at the free-throw line. Her composure and performance exemplified the hard work that defined the season.

As the game progressed, the momentum shifted. After a challenging first half, where the team struggled with their shooting, Dee-Mack surged in the second half, bolstered by Dejesus’s offensive prowess. Coach Ryan McVickers acknowledged Dejesus’s impact, stating, “We knew coming in that Dalia is a really good basketball player. Yes, that was our main goal – we have to stop her.”
