Urgent Coastal Flood Warning for Dukes and Nantucket Counties
UPDATE: A coastal flood statement has just been issued for Dukes and Nantucket counties, valid from 8 p.m. on October 27, 2023, until midnight on October 28, 2023. The National Weather Service warns of significant flooding risks, with potential inundation of up to six inches above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Residents and visitors should be cautious as roads remain passable but may experience shallow flooding, particularly near Nantucket Harbor and Easy Street. Authorities advise against driving through flooded roadways, emphasizing the dangers associated with even minor flooding.
Flash floods can develop rapidly, and the potential for flooding is heightened in these regions. A flash flood warning indicates that flooding is imminent or occurring. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to move to higher ground immediately.
“Do not drive through flooded roadways,” stated the National Weather Service. “Even 12 inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away most vehicles.”
As conditions worsen, it is crucial for individuals to understand flood safety guidelines. If you are in a flood-prone area, take these steps to ensure your safety:
- Seek higher ground: Move to elevated areas if you are in a low-lying spot.
- Follow evacuation orders: Comply promptly with any local evacuation directives.
- Disconnect utilities: If time permits, disconnect appliances to reduce electrical hazards.
- Avoid flooded areas: Stay clear of basements and rooms where water has submerged electrical outlets.
- Stay informed: Monitor local news for updates and heed warnings from authorities.
Heavy rainfall is expected, raising the risk of flooding significantly. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of preparedness during such conditions. Residents should be ready to act quickly and prioritize safety over property.
In addition, motorists are reminded to maintain safe distances and reduce speed while driving in adverse weather conditions. The first half-hour of rain is often the most hazardous, as roads become slick from the mixture of rain and oils on the surface.
This urgent alert serves as a critical reminder for all residents and visitors in the affected areas to stay vigilant and prioritize safety measures. Flooding poses serious risks, and understanding the necessary precautions can make a life-saving difference.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. Follow official sources for the latest information on weather conditions and safety alerts.
