Michigan’s Obesity Rate Hits 36.2%: Counties Show Wide Variance
A recent report reveals that an estimated 36.2% of adults in Michigan were classified as obese in 2024, marking the state’s highest obesity rate in over a decade. The findings, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in late 2025, indicate that Michigan ranks No. 33 in the nation for obesity prevalence. The statewide obesity rate, defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, last reached this level in 2019.
Obesity rates in Michigan have fluctuated in recent years. The rate was 34.5% in 2022 and increased to 35.4% in 2023. The CDC attributes the growing prevalence of obesity to various health risks, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers. These conditions, alongside obesity, significantly contributed to the severity of illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Variability Across Counties and Health Implications
Obesity rates vary considerably across Michigan’s counties. According to the latest statistics from 2022, Oakland County reported an adult obesity rate of 30%, while Muskegon County had the highest at 43%. The CDC’s findings underscore the urgent need for obesity prevention and treatment initiatives that span from childhood through adulthood. This includes promoting access to healthy food options, safe spaces for physical activity, and comprehensive health care services.
While the BMI measurement is not without its limitations—failing to account for factors such as race, gender, or muscle mass—it remains a widely used tool for assessing community health. The federal government compiles obesity data through annual surveys conducted via the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The CDC urges communities to utilize this data to inform public health strategies.
The economic impact of obesity is significant, costing the U.S. health care system nearly $173 billion annually. Research from the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery indicates that moderate obesity can reduce life expectancy by approximately three years, while severe obesity can shorten it by up to ten years.
National and Regional Trends
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. has made addressing obesity a central theme of his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign. He stresses the importance of shifting dietary habits towards high-quality, nutrient-dense foods and away from processed alternatives. In light of rising national obesity rates, Kennedy advocates for systemic changes in food policies.
Nationally, the CDC reports that around 40.3% of adults were obese between August 2021 and August 2023, with severe obesity affecting approximately 9.4%. In the Midwest, Michigan stands out with the fourth-lowest obesity rate among twelve states, trailing only behind Minnesota, Illinois, and Missouri.
Since 2015, only seven counties in Michigan have seen a decrease or stabilization in their obesity rates. Counties such as Allegan, Barry, and Cass have reported declines, while others like Grand Traverse and Shiawassee have remained consistent.
Concerns extend beyond adult obesity, as rates among children and adolescents are rising. Currently, the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics reports that 21.1% of youth aged 2 to 19 are considered obese, a stark increase from 5.2% in the early 1970s. In response, health departments like the one in Kent County are taking action. Their recently released Childhood Obesity Surveillance Report tracks obesity rates by ZIP code, aiming to identify areas in need of targeted interventions to foster healthy lifestyles.
The latest findings on obesity in Michigan highlight a complex public health challenge that requires a multifaceted approach. As communities grapple with these issues, the focus on accessible health resources and sustainable lifestyle changes will be paramount in curbing the rising tide of obesity.
