USC Trojans Face Tough Challenge Against Notre Dame This Weekend
The No. 20 USC Trojans, fresh off a convincing 31-13 victory over Michigan, now prepare for a challenging matchup against the No. 13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish this weekend. The game, part of the storied rivalry for the Jeweled Shillelagh, is set for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff at Notre Dame Stadium. The Fighting Irish, considered one of the top two-loss teams in the nation, opened as a touchdown favorite, but betting odds have shifted to make them nearly double-digit favorites against the Trojans.
This week, the Trojans were initially listed as +7.5 underdogs, but that figure has now increased to +9.5 according to ESPN BET, marking a significant change as the week progresses. This is the first instance this season that USC has entered a game as an underdog, reflecting the mounting pressure as they face a formidable opponent.
USC’s Season So Far
USC entered the season with high expectations, having opened as favorites in their first six games. Despite starting the season 0-2 with losses against ranked teams Miami and Texas A&M, the Trojans have shown resilience. Their recent win against Michigan suggests they have regained some momentum, yet questions remain about their ability to perform under pressure, particularly in road games.
The Trojans’ loss to then-ranked No. 23 Illinois earlier this season highlighted their struggles against ranked opponents. They entered that game as -1.5 point favorites but ended up losing 34-32. Under head coach Lincoln Riley, USC has encountered difficulties away from home, as four of their five losses last season came on the road.
Challenges Ahead for USC
For USC to secure a victory against Notre Dame, controlling the line of scrimmage will be crucial. Protecting quarterback Jayden Maiava will be a top priority for the offensive line, which must provide him with sufficient time to execute plays effectively. The Fighting Irish possess a robust defensive front, making this one of the toughest tests for the Trojans this season.
In light of injuries to running backs Waymond Jordan and Eli Sanders, USC will rely on walk-on running back King Miller to lead their rushing attack. His performance will be pivotal, especially against a stout Notre Dame defense.
On the defensive end, the Trojans must prepare to face an explosive Notre Dame offense capable of scoring through both the air and on the ground. Even in their two losses this season, the Fighting Irish managed to score at least 24 points. Running back Jeremiyah Love stands out, having rushed for 530 yards and eight touchdowns on 100 carries, posing a significant challenge for USC’s defense.
As the game approaches, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Trojans can rise to the occasion and upset their rivals. Game odds are subject to change, and those seeking support for gambling issues can contact 1-800-GAMBLER for assistance.
