Half Moon Bay Approves Urgent Housing for Elderly Farmworkers
UPDATE: A special city council meeting in Half Moon Bay just concluded with significant developments regarding housing for elderly farmworkers. Mercy Housing, a nonprofit organization, has proposed a plan to construct 40 apartment units specifically designed for retired farmworkers, aiming to alleviate a growing housing crisis.
During the meeting held on October 12, 2023, representatives from Mercy Housing announced they had secured over $13 million from the housing farmworker program, making substantial progress toward delivering these essential homes. “Since our last meeting, we’ve made strides in bringing 40 homes to this community,” a spokesperson for Mercy Housing confirmed.
This housing initiative is crucial as it seeks to address the dire living conditions faced by many farmworkers, conditions worsened by a tragic incident in July 2023, when a shooting resulted in the deaths of seven farmworkers. ALAS, a partner nonprofit, emphasizes the urgent need for improved housing, citing the cramped and inadequate living situations that many farmworkers endure. “Some people live in horrible conditions… they want to have a dignifying life after 50 or 65,” stated Luizbuzain Enrique Bazaan, Director of Community Engagement at ALAS.
Despite the positive strides, the project has encountered delays due to ongoing appeals. City council members raised concerns about parking regulations and funding specifics, indicating further discussions will be necessary. Local residents have shown overwhelming support for the initiative. Community members like Ana Morales and Noreen Cooper Havlen vocalized the pressing need for this project, urging the council to expedite the approval process.
The city council plans to hold another meeting in the coming weeks to continue deliberations on this impactful housing project. As residents and organizations rally for its approval, the focus remains on improving the quality of life for elderly farmworkers in the region.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Half Moon Bay community seeks to secure a more dignified future for its elderly farmworkers.
