Hawaii Schools Report Rise in Gastrointestinal Illnesses Linked to Milk

As of Thursday morning, the Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed a rise in gastrointestinal illnesses potentially linked to Meadow Gold chocolate milk, with approximately 15 individuals reported affected. This marks an increase from nine reported cases just a day prior. Most affected individuals are experiencing mild symptoms, including stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. The illnesses have been reported across four school facilities on Oahu, while two additional schools—one on Maui and another also on Oahu—have reported quality issues with the product, although no confirmed illnesses have been linked to those cases.

Investigation Underway Following Recall

Health officials are currently conducting an ongoing investigation, and they caution that the number of reported cases may change as new information becomes available. As of now, no definitive link has been established between the recalled chocolate milk and the illnesses. Laboratory testing of the milk samples is underway, focusing on identifying any bacterial toxins. Preliminary inspections at the affected schools have not revealed any food safety violations.

The investigation was initiated after Meadow Gold Dairy voluntarily recalled around 70,000 half-pint cartons of chocolate milk with an expiration date of October 16, 2023. This product, which was made and packaged out of state, was distributed to nearly 200 schools and institutions across Oahu, Maui, and Kauai on September 29, 2023. The recall was prompted by reports of “potential quality control issues,” according to a statement released by the Department of Health on Tuesday evening.

According to officials, some of the recalled milk exhibited an unusually thick texture, resembling chocolate pudding, raising concerns among consumers and health authorities alike. Meadow Gold representatives have stated that the company is actively cooperating with both the Health Department and the Hawaii Department of Education to facilitate the collection and replacement of the affected products.

Public Health Advisory Issued

Residents are encouraged to report any symptoms experienced after consuming the recalled chocolate milk by contacting the DOH Disease Reporting Line at (808) 586-4586. Individuals who experience severe or concerning symptoms are advised to seek medical attention immediately. Health officials also recommend that consumers refrain from consuming any Meadow Gold chocolate milk labeled “OCT 16” and to discard any cartons that appear, smell, or taste unusual.
