MTA Investigates Subway Cars Detaching from Train in Bronx
URGENT UPDATE: Several subway cars detached from a train in a shocking incident in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon, leaving commuters stranded and raising urgent safety concerns. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. near the 149th Street-Grand Concourse station, involving three cars from a ten-car No. 4 subway train.
MTA officials are scrambling for answers as they investigate this unprecedented occurrence. Transit President Demetrius Crichlow described the separation as “an unusual incident,” assuring that the train’s brakes activated correctly, bringing both sections to a safe stop. “The system itself failed as it should have in a safe position,” Crichlow stated.
Images and videos shared with Eyewitness News depict the detached cars, with cables hanging and emergency responders flooding the station. A rescue train was dispatched to assist passengers in transferring back to the platform, as confusion and panic gripped those waiting.
While no injuries have been reported, the emotional toll on passengers was palpable. One mother, Bridget Berkley, expressed her distress while waiting to be reunited with her son aboard the train. “It’s panicky, it’s very panicky. I’ve been standing here stressed and worried for my son,” she said, highlighting the human impact of this frightening situation.
The MTA has announced plans to inspect all R142 model subway cars to determine if a defect contributed to the detachment. Commuters faced significant delays and detours following the incident, but service has now been restored as investigations continue.
With the MTA actively seeking answers, officials are under pressure to ensure the safety of New York City’s subway system. Stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent investigation.
