Ex-Trump Official Slams GOP for Shutdown Fight Failures
URGENT UPDATE: Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer has delivered a scathing critique of Senate Republicans following a failed attempt to advance the Shutdown Fairness Act of 2025. The bill, designed to guarantee pay for military and federal workers amid the ongoing government shutdown, was blocked by Democrats, falling short of the necessary votes with a final tally of 54-45.
Speaking on his podcast earlier today, Spicer expressed his disappointment, stating, “Senate Republicans should be embarrassed by how bad they’re messaging this.” He emphasized that GOP members needed to show solidarity and support for federal employees, suggesting they should have gathered on the steps of the Capitol with military personnel and Border Patrol agents.
The Shutdown Fairness Act, introduced by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), aimed to ensure continued pay for “excepted” federal employees, which includes active-duty troops, TSA agents, park rangers, air traffic controllers, and Border Patrol officers. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) dismissed the proposal, labeling it a “ruse” that would grant improper authority to Trump’s budget director, Russell Vought. “We will not give Donald Trump a license to play politics with people’s livelihoods,” Schumer stated.
Spicer’s remarks underscore a growing frustration within the party. He criticized Republicans for their lackadaisical response, calling their actions “literally the lamest response” he had ever seen. He further added, “The idea that they voted and bolted is an embarrassment to the Republican Party.”
With the government shutdown affecting countless federal employees and military families, the urgency for a resolution is palpable. The failure of this bill not only highlights internal party struggles but also raises serious concerns about the livelihoods of those who serve the nation.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Senate Republicans and their next steps in addressing the shutdown and ensuring that federal workers are not left in limbo. The political landscape is shifting, and immediate action is needed to safeguard the interests of American workers.
