Senator Gallego Calls for Bipartisan Action Amid Government Shutdown
Concerns over a government shutdown and rising health care costs took center stage when Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) appeared on MSNBC with host Ali Vitali. During the interview, Gallego criticized what he described as a lack of effective leadership from the Republican Party, emphasizing the immediate need for action to protect federal workers and address escalating health insurance premiums.
The senator outlined various urgent issues, notably the impact of a potential shutdown on federal employees and those dependent on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). He proposed two bills aimed at ensuring that government employees and contractors receive their pay during this crisis. Gallego stated, “We’re not going to give the power to the president to basically to pick and choose to pay the federal employees that he likes versus the federal employees that we all want, which is across the board, everybody.”
Gallego’s remarks come as reports indicate that health care premiums could nearly double starting on November 1, creating a significant financial burden for families. He highlighted that in Arizona, the average family of four could see their insurance costs increase by almost $3,400, amounting to a staggering $7,600 a year. He stressed, “They’re going to be paying $760 more in premiums essentially a month,” underlining the potential consequences for many Americans.
The senator did not hold back in his criticism of GOP leaders, specifically targeting Senate Majority Whip John Thune and former President Donald Trump. He accused them of failing to provide necessary leadership during this critical time, stating, “What we’re looking at when it comes to true leadership coming from Thune, and the lack of leadership coming from Donald Trump, we don’t see anything.” Gallego also expressed concern over Representative Mike Johnson, claiming that his absence has hindered Congress from addressing pressing issues effectively.
Gallego’s agenda is clear: he seeks lower insurance premiums for Americans and a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government. He stated, “All we want is two things. Number one, keeping insurance premiums very low for as many Americans as possible. And number two, having a good deal when it comes to reopening the government, which again, we agree has to be a compromise no matter what.”
As the shutdown looms and health care costs threaten to rise, Gallego’s call for action emphasizes the need for collaboration across party lines to find a resolution that benefits all Americans.
