Rubio Commits to Recovering Bodies of All Israeli Hostages

Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged on Saturday to ensure the return of all deceased Israeli hostages as efforts continue to locate their remains in the Gaza Strip. Rubio made this commitment during a visit to Jerusalem, where he met with the families of Itay Chen, 19, and Omer Neutra, 21, both of whom were killed by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Their bodies are believed to be among those held by the militant group.

In a post on social media platform X, Rubio stated, “We will not rest until their — and all — remains are returned.” He emphasized the importance of remembering the lives lost during the hostage crisis, asserting that the U.S. government remains dedicated to this cause.

Since the cease-fire agreement brokered by President Trump on September 29, 2023, Israel has received the remains of 15 out of 28 identified deceased captives, alongside the release of all 20 living hostages. The ongoing recovery operations are supported by an Egyptian team, which has entered Gaza to assist in locating the remains of hostages still unaccounted for.

Efforts to Recover Hostage Remains

The urgency of the situation is underscored by statements from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which welcomed Rubio’s comments, stating, “Thirteen hostages need to come home. Thirteen families need closure.” Thousands of protesters gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square on Saturday evening, demanding the return of the remaining bodies to Israel.

Rubio’s visit to Israel concluded a three-day trip before he traveled to Doha to meet with Donald Trump and Qatar’s Emir to discuss the establishment of an international peacekeeping force in Gaza. Onboard his flight, Rubio mentioned that the U.S. is working on a United Nations resolution to facilitate this mission. “Many of the countries that have expressed an interest in participating at some level — whether it be monetary or personnel or both — are going to need that because their domestic laws require it,” he explained to reporters.

Israeli officials are cautiously optimistic that Hamas may return the bodies of two more deceased hostages on Sunday, following pressure from mediators. Reports from Channel 12 indicate that the Israeli government has accused Hamas of delaying the release of all slain hostages, despite having the capability to do so.

Military Objectives and Strategic Goals

An Egyptian team equipped with engineering vehicles entered Gaza on Saturday, a move personally sanctioned by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The team aims to assist in recovering the bodies of the deceased hostages. According to discussions between Israeli Defense Forces officials and Vice President JD Vance, there is a belief that Hamas may be able to return the bodies of at least 10 of the remaining 13 deceased hostages still in their possession.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the primary objective for Israel is to dismantle Hamas’ network of tunnels across Gaza, which he claims are still 60% operational. Katz emphasized the importance of destroying these tunnels, stating, “The demilitarization of Gaza by destroying Hamas’s terror tunnels, alongside disarming Hamas, is, in my view, the most important strategic objective for achieving victory in Gaza.”
