UPDATE: The town of Adams, ND is grappling with an acute water crisis as residents adapt to life without running water. Following a catastrophic failure of the town’s well casing on October 15, 1991, the community has been left without a reliable water supply since October 20, 1991, when the last drops were pumped from the water tower.

Residents are responding to this urgent situation by melting snow, hauling water from distant locations, and relying on the generosity of neighbors and relatives. “You learn to scrimp a little bit,” said Aneta Vejtasa, who operates the Prairie Lanes Cafe. She shared how the absence of running water has made her appreciate modern conveniences more than ever.

Despite the challenges, life in Adams continues. Longtime resident Lillian Bakke refused to let the water crisis derail her weekly hair appointment. After shampooing at home, she arrived at Nygard’s Beauty Shop with wet hair, where beautician Kathy Drevecky managed to work her magic without a steady water source. “It was business as usual,” Bakke remarked, showcasing the community’s resilience.

Families are creatively managing their water needs, with some even venturing to the homes of relatives who have access to running water. Meanwhile, the local school has seen students bringing packed lunches to cope with the situation, though for sixth-grader Joe Karas, the novelty has worn off, stating, “A person can only eat so much cold pizza.”

Efforts are underway to find a new water source, with a Fargo company conducting tests. However, residents are still waiting for a solution as multiple test wells have yet to yield adequate results. “We thought we were in heaven yesterday when we had water running through the taps,” Vejtasa added, reflecting the community’s deep yearning for this basic necessity.

As the crisis unfolds, the people of Adams are demonstrating remarkable adaptability and resourcefulness. The situation remains fluid—monitoring efforts continue, and residents are holding onto hope that a sustainable solution will soon be found.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the town of Adams strives to reclaim its access to running water.
