Two Gen X Couples ‘Rightsize’ to Vibrant Community Near Hudson
UPDATE: In a major shift for suburban living, two Gen X couples, the Falks and the Coopermans, have just moved to the under-construction Edge-on-Hudson development in Sleepy Hollow, New York, marking a significant trend among empty-nesters seeking vibrant, community-oriented lifestyles.
Both couples, in their mid-to-late 50s, decided to “rightsize” after their children left home. They sought accessible, low-maintenance homes that would still provide room for family gatherings. The Falks, having sold their 100-year-old house in Edgemont, New York, are trading suburban life for urban convenience while staying close to the Hudson River.
This transition comes amid a growing movement among Gen Xers and Baby Boomers who are not quite ready for retirement but are eager for a new chapter. As Stephanie Falk noted, “I just believe fully in community… being around other like-minded people can be really beneficial.”
The couples were drawn to Edge-on-Hudson, a new mixed-use development that promises nearly 1,200 townhomes, condos, and apartments across 70 acres. The site, once a GM assembly plant, will also feature a park, grocery store, and hotel. With the new homes priced starting at $1.6 million, both couples sold their previous houses for a profit, enabling them to invest in a lifestyle that prioritizes accessibility and community engagement.
In late July 2024, they transitioned into rental apartments within the development, allowing them to settle in while the construction of their townhomes is completed. The excitement is palpable, as the Coopermans noted that five other couples they know have expressed interest in joining them at Edge-on-Hudson.
Both families are already fostering new connections in the area. “It’s kind of like going to college when you’re a freshman; everyone wants to meet people,” Judy Cooperman remarked, highlighting the friendly atmosphere and vibrant community life that awaits them.
As they embrace this new chapter, the Falks and the Coopermans exemplify a significant cultural shift towards community-centric living among empty-nesters. This trend reflects a desire to maintain social engagements and active lifestyles without the burdens of traditional suburban homes.
With the development still underway, the Falks and the Coopermans are poised to enjoy a lifestyle that combines the best of urban accessibility with the warmth of community. As more Gen Xers and Boomers explore similar options, this movement signals a transformative moment in suburban living.
Stay tuned for further updates on the completion of Edge-on-Hudson and its impact on the local community.
