UPDATE: Washington Township is revitalizing the historic Thorington Schoolhouse, a landmark dating back to the 1840s. Under the leadership of Supervisor Sam Previti, the schoolhouse has been relocated to become the centerpiece of the newly planned Thorington Park, an initiative just confirmed by local officials.

This significant move marks a sharp turnaround for the once-neglected structure at the corner of Mound and 31 Mile roads, which was acquired for $125,000. The township’s Board of Trustees approved the relocation with a majority vote, emphasizing the community’s commitment to preserving local history.

The park, set to open soon, will include a play structure, pavilion, and pickleball courts. Additionally, thanks to generous donations from local orchardists, an apple orchard will enhance the park’s appeal, making it a vibrant community hub.

According to a report by WWJ Newsradio, the process of moving the schoolhouse was intricate and challenging. Videos captured the careful operation as specialized crews from C & A Building Movers hoisted the structure and transported it onto a semi-truck, disconnecting utilities with precision.

In a unique educational twist, Romeo High School students are actively involved in the restoration project. They are learning hands-on skills as they help restore the schoolhouse, which has already yielded fascinating artifacts, including a 1930s fourth-grade test during initial explorations.

“This project is a true community effort,” Previti stated, highlighting the significance of local involvement in the preservation and revitalization of the schoolhouse.

Students plan to restore windows using period-specific wavy glass, maintaining the historical integrity of the building. This initiative not only preserves history but also instills a sense of pride and connection among the youth of the community.

As the project unfolds, residents can look forward to a revitalized park that honors the past while creating a space for future generations. The timeline for completion remains under discussion, with township officials urging the community to stay tuned for further updates.

Given the blend of historical significance and community engagement, the Thorington Schoolhouse project stands as a beacon of local heritage and involvement. Watch for more developments as Washington Township continues to breathe new life into this cherished landmark.
