Nick Mangold, Jets Legend, Dies at 41 After Kidney Disease Battle
BREAKING: Nick Mangold, the iconic center for the New York Jets, has died at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease, the team announced today. The seven-time Pro Bowler had been undergoing dialysis treatments since spring 2023, following a lengthy battle with health issues.
In a heartfelt social media post earlier this year, Mangold revealed his struggle, stating, “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease… I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.” His passing marks a tragic end to a storied career that defined an era of Jets football.
Mangold was drafted in the first round by the Jets in 2006 from Ohio State and quickly became a cornerstone of the offensive line. He missed only four starts during his first ten seasons, showcasing his extraordinary durability and commitment to the team. Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed the profound loss, stating, “Nick was more than a legendary center… He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade.”
Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan fought back tears while reflecting on Mangold’s legacy during a live ESPN segment, saying, “It’s brutal, such a great young man that I had the pleasure to coach.” Ryan recalled a moment when Mangold insisted on playing even while injured, a testament to his character and dedication.
Throughout his career, Mangold earned accolades including First Team All-Pro honors twice and was selected to the Pro Bowl every year from 2008 to 2015, except for 2012. His leadership and performance on the field earned him respect from fans and peers alike, solidifying his place as one of the best centers in the league.
Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor on June 2, 2022, alongside fellow greats D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Darrelle Revis. Jets vice chairman Christopher Johnson emphasized Mangold’s impact, stating, “He anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination… It was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”
As the Jets community mourns this immense loss, Johnson extended condolences to Mangold’s family, including his wife Jenny and their four children—Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. “Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet,” Johnson concluded in the official statement.
This tragic news is a reminder of the fragility of life and the deep connections formed through sports. As tributes pour in from fans and fellow players, Mangold’s legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of many.
