Joseph Legueri, Beloved Teacher and Family Man, Passes Away at 81
BREAKING NEWS: Joseph Angelo Legueri, a cherished educator and family man, has passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on October 9, 2025. His legacy extends beyond his years, touching countless lives through his teaching and his joyful spirit, even amid his battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Legueri’s teaching career began at Duluth Cathedral in 1967 and continued for over three decades until his retirement in 2001. Known for his engaging personality, he was adored by students, many of whom remember his humorous catchphrase, “The heck you say,” as a hallmark of his classroom.
In 1962, Joe met his soulmate, Shirley, while driving an after-school activity bus, and they shared a remarkable 58 years of marriage. Together, they built a home in the woods and created lasting memories with their two children, Tony and Gina Haggard. Joe’s commitment to family extended to his three beloved grandchildren: Thomas, Cooper, and Kelsie, whom he taught to embrace silliness and love.
Born to Dorothy and Angelo Legueri in Nashwauk, Joe was the only son among four sisters, and he maintained a unique bond with each of them—aggravating yet loving. A man of many talents, he was not only a dedicated teacher but also an accomplished builder and a passionate tinkerer, with a special affection for his 1948 Studebaker.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Legueri family has chosen not to hold a traditional service. Instead, they invite friends and loved ones to celebrate Joe’s life by sharing stories—some may be true, some may not—and raising a glass in his honor. Their hope is to create an atmosphere filled with laughter, reflecting how Joe lived his life to the fullest.
As news of Joseph Legueri’s passing spreads, friends and family are encouraged to share their favorite memories on social media, celebrating a life well-lived. This is a time for remembrance and joy, as those who knew him gather to honor his legacy with warmth, humor, and love.
