Lauri Markkanen Scores 51 Points, Leads Jazz to Overtime Victory
UPDATE: Lauri Markkanen has just made NBA history, scoring a staggering 51 points as the Utah Jazz triumphed over the Phoenix Suns 138-134 in an exhilarating overtime match on October 30, 2023. Markkanen’s remarkable performance marks the first time a Jazz player has reached the 50-point milestone in regular season play since Karl Malone in 1998.
The Jazz appeared to be cruising to victory, leading by seven points with just 19 seconds left in regulation. However, a late surge from the Suns forced overtime, showcasing the thrilling unpredictability of the game. Markkanen, who also pulled down 14 rebounds, scored seven critical points in the extra period, sealing the victory for Utah.
Markkanen didn’t just break the 50-point barrier; he tied a franchise record by making all 17 free throws without a miss, tying the all-time best in Jazz history. This performance not only exceeded his previous career high of 49 points set earlier this year but also made him the first player in Jazz history to achieve 50 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 three-pointers in a single game.
In a significant team effort, Keyonte George added 26 points and 10 assists, while Walker Kessler contributed 25 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. The Jazz (2-1) are defying expectations, being just a rebound away from a perfect record, while the struggling Suns (1-3) have now lost three consecutive games.
The thrilling finish was set up by Devin Booker, who scored 24 of his 34 points after halftime. In a last-minute twist, the Suns rallied back from a three-point deficit, forcing overtime with a buzzer-beater rebound by Mark Williams, who returned from injury to score 25 points and grab 11 rebounds.
The Jazz’s historic performance also highlights their long-standing struggle with 50-point games, going 27 years and 203 days since the last. This is now the fourth-longest gap in NBA history when excluding playoff performances.
“We showed resilience tonight; we didn’t back down,” said Markkanen after the game. “I’m just happy we got the win.”
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Jazz to see if they can maintain this momentum. With their next game looming, fans are eagerly anticipating how Markkanen and his teammates will build on this remarkable victory. The Jazz are quickly becoming a team to watch in the league, while the Suns face urgent challenges to turn their season around.
