Firefighters Warned of Palisades Fire Risk Days Before Blaze
UPDATE: New reports reveal that Los Angeles firefighters issued urgent warnings about a fire still smoldering just days before the devastating Pacific Palisades blaze erupted. This revelation raises critical questions about the effectiveness of the city’s fire response and has sparked public outrage.
Just six days before the Pacific Palisades fire ignited on January 1, 2025, firefighters were actively battling the smaller Lachman Fire. Text messages obtained by the Los Angeles Times indicate discontent among firefighters, who expressed concerns that commanders had not ensured the Lachman Fire was fully extinguished. One firefighter noted his disbelief that crews were ordered to leave the scene when “tree stumps were still hot.”
The situation escalated when officials arrested Jonathan Rinderknecht on October 8, 2025, in connection with a criminal investigation into the Pacific Palisades fire. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Central District of California, authorities confirmed that the Palisades Fire was a continuation of the Lachman Fire, contradicting earlier claims linking the destruction to climate change.
Videos circulating on social media show smoke rising from smoldering bushes days before the Pacific Palisades fire broke out. These visuals have been included in a lawsuit against the state and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
Former reality TV star Spencer Pratt has voiced strong criticism of government officials following the disaster, which directly impacted his family. In response to the Los Angeles Times report, Pratt shared direct communications with an LAFD firefighter. The firefighter described observing multiple hot spots during the Lachman Fire and expressed disbelief that crews were ordered to pack up. “There were several hot spots… tons of smoldering tree stumps still remained,” the message stated, highlighting significant oversights in fire management.
The fallout from the fire has led to significant political repercussions. Both California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have faced backlash for their handling of the crisis. In February 2025, Mayor Bass terminated LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley in light of reports detailing failures in response to both the Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires.
As investigations continue, residents are demanding accountability and changes to ensure better fire management in the future. The LAFD has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these critical allegations.
What’s Next: As the investigation unfolds, further developments are expected. Residents are urged to stay informed as officials reassess fire management protocols to prevent future disasters.
This story is rapidly evolving, and the implications for fire safety and community welfare are profound. Share this urgent update with those who need to know about the failures in fire management that led to the devastating Pacific Palisades fire.
