Dutch National Opera Stages Bellini’s ‘I Capuleti e i Montecchi’
The Dutch National Opera has announced its upcoming production of Vincenzo Bellini’s rarely performed opera, I Capuleti e i Montecchi. Scheduled to run from December 7 to 28, 2025, the production will showcase the talents of Yaritza Veliz, who is making her debut at the DNO in the role of Giulietta, alongside Vasilisa Berzhanskaya as Romeo.
Conducted by Antonino Fogliani, the performance will feature the Netherlands Philharmonic. The cast will also include Jerzy Butryn, Julien Dran, and Bogdan Talos, rounding out a diverse ensemble.
New Production with a Contemporary Perspective
Directed by Tatjana Gürbaca, this new interpretation of I Capuleti e i Montecchi aims to resonate with contemporary audiences. Gürbaca’s vision draws parallels between the opera’s themes of familial conflict and modern political struggles. She notes that “older rulers with big egos can hold society to ransom and destroy the future of younger generations.” This perspective aims to engage audiences not only through the rich emotional landscape of the opera but also through its relevance to current global issues.
The staging of this opera, although less frequently performed, highlights the enduring appeal of Bellini’s work, which combines intricate melodies with profound emotional depth. The opera is based on Shakespeare’s tragic tale of the star-crossed lovers, set against a backdrop of family feuds.
A Celebration of Talent and Artistry
The production promises to showcase the exceptional skills of its leading performers. Yaritza Veliz, known for her powerful soprano, is expected to deliver a memorable portrayal of Giulietta. Her co-star, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, brings her rich mezzo-soprano voice to the role of Romeo, promising a dynamic and engaging performance.
As the Dutch National Opera prepares for this ambitious project, it reflects a commitment to both artistic excellence and social commentary. Audiences can look forward to a unique opera experience that not only entertains but also prompts reflection on contemporary societal issues.
