FDA Issues Urgent Recall of Fish Products Due to Health Risks
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a significant recall of a fish product manufactured in New York due to serious health concerns. The agency has identified that packages of “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” from New Hoque & Sons Inc. were distributed nationwide without the removal of internal organs, a violation that poses a potential risk of botulism.
Details of the Recall
New Hoque & Sons Inc., located in Maspeth, NY, is recalling approximately 10-12 pound packages of “Dry Ghoinnya Fish.” The recalled products bear an expiration date of May 19, 2025, stamped on the bottom of the clear plastic packaging. The product UPC is 908172635412.
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets discovered the issue during routine inspections. Their analysis confirmed the fish was uneviscerated, meaning the internal organs had not been removed. This oversight is not only a health violation under New York State regulations, but it also heightens the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, which can lead to severe foodborne illness.
Health Risks and Consumer Guidance
The FDA emphasizes that the sale of uneviscerated fish is illegal in New York due to the heightened risk of botulism, a serious illness that can arise from consuming improperly processed seafood. Symptoms of botulism include dizziness, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and muscle weakness. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
Currently, there have been no reported illnesses connected to this recall. The FDA urges consumers who have purchased the affected “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further questions, individuals may contact New Hoque & Sons Inc. at (718) 391-0992.
This recall serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of food safety and proper processing practices. As health officials continue to monitor the situation, consumers are advised to remain vigilant regarding the products they purchase.
