Parents Advised to Avoid Counterfeit Labubu Dolls Due to Risks
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a safety warning regarding counterfeit Labubu dolls, commonly referred to as Lafufus. These imitation toys may present significant hazards, particularly for young children. The ACCC’s advisory highlights concerns about potential choking risks and harmful chemical exposure, notably lead.
As counterfeit Labubu dolls flood the market, parents are urged to scrutinize their purchases carefully. The ACCC pointed out that these Lafufus often feature detachable parts, such as eyes and hands, which can pose choking hazards. Furthermore, the dolls may be made from substandard materials, increasing the risk of injury. The agency stated, “Watch out for potential safety risks associated with counterfeit or fake Labubu dolls – often called Lafufus – and keep these products away from young children.”
Identifying Genuine Labubu Dolls
To help consumers distinguish between authentic Labubu dolls, manufactured by the company Pop Mart, and their counterfeit counterparts, the ACCC provided several identifying characteristics. Genuine Labubus possess exactly nine teeth, while Lafufus may have too wide ears and poor stitching. Additionally, authentic dolls typically retail for about $32 for smaller versions, with more exclusive models priced as high as $340. Counterfeit dolls are often sold at significantly reduced prices, making them more tempting for unsuspecting buyers.
The New South Wales (NSW) Fair Trading agency also issued a warning earlier this year, noting the rise of counterfeit dolls in response to the growing popularity of Labubus. The agency advised consumers to purchase from reputable online retailers and to read reviews before making a purchase.
Health Risks of Lead Exposure
Concerns about lead exposure are particularly pronounced for children, as even low levels can adversely affect mental and physical development. The NSW health department emphasizes that lead can result in decreased intelligence, impaired growth, and hearing issues in children. In adults, lead exposure can lead to high blood pressure and damage kidney and brain function.
Parents who suspect their child may have been exposed to lead should act promptly. The Sydney Children’s Hospital network recommends removing the potentially harmful toy and contacting their local poisons information center for guidance. This can help determine if a visit to a healthcare provider is necessary.
As the market for Labubu dolls continues to expand, parents must remain vigilant against counterfeit products that could jeopardize their children’s safety. The ACCC’s warning serves as a crucial reminder to prioritize safety over price when shopping for toys.
