Understanding the “Tattoo Flu”: Symptoms and Remedies Explained
The phenomenon known as “tattoo flu” affects some individuals after receiving tattoos, particularly larger pieces or during extended sessions. This condition is not an actual virus but rather an immune response to the physical stress of tattooing, as experts explain. Symptoms can include body aches, fever, chills, and nausea, leading many to describe the experience as akin to having a hangover.
Mary Lupo, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist affiliated with Tulane University, highlighted that the body’s reaction is influenced by individual sensitivity. “This absolutely happens,” Dr. Lupo stated. “It’s an immune response, and I think it’s very dependent on the individual and their sensitivity. The bigger the tattoo, the greater the assault, and you’re probably more likely to get it on subsequent tattoos.”
While many attribute their symptoms to the tattoo process, some health professionals note that other factors could contribute to these feelings of malaise. Timothy Lebron, a tattoo artist at the HERE tattoo parlour in Brooklyn, mentioned that first-time clients often experience this phenomenon. “Plenty of people get hit with that foggy, feverish feeling after a tattoo,” he remarked.
### Symptoms and Reactions
Individuals who have reported experiencing tattoo flu describe a range of symptoms. One user on Reddit noted feeling “nauseous, hot, and exhausted,” while another mentioned “fever and horrible cold chills,” stating, “I felt like I got hit by a truck.” The variety of reactions suggests that the severity of symptoms can differ significantly among tattoo recipients.
Adding to the discussion, Jeff Garnett, co-founder of InkLess Tattoo Removal in New York City, shared his own experience with tattoo flu after two 10-hour sessions in 2020. He characterized the symptoms as a natural response to the body’s defense mechanisms in reaction to “a metal needle going into your skin thousands of times.”
Interestingly, Garnett theorizes that some individuals who feel unwell post-tattoo may actually be battling common viral infections. “Your body can only handle so much,” he stated, suggesting that the immune system’s focus on tattoo healing may leave individuals susceptible to other illnesses.
### Managing Symptoms After Tattooing
For those concerned about the effects of tattoo flu, experts recommend several strategies to mitigate symptoms. Staying hydrated before and after the tattoo session is crucial. Garnett emphasizes avoiding extended sessions during tattoo removal, as laser therapy can also provoke immune reactions.
Lebron advises consuming a well-balanced meal and suggests foods or beverages rich in electrolytes. Dr. Lupo adds that an anti-inflammatory medication might provide relief following a tattoo session. “Most of the time, people sort of treat it symptomatically and deal with it,” she explained.
Rest and hydration are key components of recovery. “If it hits you, don’t panic,” Lebron concluded. “Rest. Drink water. Eat something with salt and carbs. Take a warm shower. You’ll usually feel fine by the next day.”
While some individuals are fortunate enough to avoid tattoo flu entirely, experiencing no adverse effects regardless of the number of tattoos, the conversation around this phenomenon continues to evolve. As the tattoo culture expands, understanding these responses becomes increasingly important for both artists and clients alike.
