Israel Receives Body of Soldier Killed in 2014 Gaza Conflict

Israel has received the body of Lt Hadar Goldin, a soldier killed in an ambush during the Gaza conflict in 2014. His remains had been held in Gaza since his death. The Israeli military confirmed that Lt Goldin, who was 23 years old at the time of his death, was formally identified and will now be buried. He is survived by his parents, a sister, two brothers, and a fiancée.

The return of Lt Goldin’s body came as part of a ceasefire agreement negotiated with Hamas, which had stated it would hand over his remains as part of the deal. This follows the return of all 20 living hostages and 24 out of 28 deceased hostages under the initial phase of the agreement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on the significance of this development, stating that Lt Goldin’s family can now provide him with a Jewish burial. He reiterated his commitment to recovering the bodies of all deceased hostages, declaring, “We have returned 250 so far. We will bring them all back.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expressed its condolences to Lt Goldin’s family and emphasized ongoing efforts to return all deceased hostages. They noted that retrieving Lt Goldin involved extensive intelligence operations and ground activities over the past decade, particularly during the two-year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Background of Lt Goldin’s Death

Lt Goldin, originally from Kfar Saba, was the only deceased hostage whose remains were held in Gaza prior to the recent escalation resulting from the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas. He was killed on August 1, 2014, shortly after a ceasefire began during that year’s war. While patrolling an agricultural area near Rafah, Lt Goldin and his unit were ambushed by Hamas fighters. The Israeli military determined that he was killed in a firefight, and his body was subsequently taken into an underground tunnel by the assailants.

In response to this incident, the Israeli military launched a significant bombardment in an attempt to prevent Hamas from taking Lt Goldin hostage. The operation resulted in numerous casualties, with scores of Palestinian civilians killed in Rafah over four days, even after Lt Goldin was declared deceased.

Recent Violence and Casualties

On the same day that Lt Goldin’s body was returned, Israeli military actions in Gaza resulted in the deaths of two Palestinians. The Israeli military stated that the individuals had crossed the designated line of control and posed an “immediate threat.” Additionally, another Palestinian was shot dead, and one was wounded in separate incidents as reported by local medical officials.

Since the beginning of the ceasefire, the Hamas-run health ministry has reported that Israeli military actions have resulted in at least 241 fatalities in Gaza. This follows a broader Israeli military campaign initiated in response to the October attack, during which Hamas gunmen killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel and took 251 hostages. The health ministry indicated that since the escalation, at least 69,176 individuals have died in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict.
