Tift Regional Medical Center Honors Marguerite Merritt with PHIL Award
The Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) Respiratory Care Department held a ceremony to honor the late Marguerite Merritt by presenting her with The PHIL Award posthumously. Merritt, a dedicated respiratory therapist, served at TRMC for over 47 years before her passing in August 2025. Her family and close friends accepted the award on her behalf, recognizing her significant contributions to patient care.
A Tribute to a Lifelong Commitment
The PHIL Award is part of a nationally recognized program that acknowledges exceptional respiratory therapists who deliver outstanding care to patients with respiratory conditions. Recipients are nominated by patients, family members, and fellow caregivers, highlighting the profound impact these professionals have on their communities. The award pays tribute to those who understand that each breath matters.
During the tribute, attendees included TRMC’s Respiratory Care Director Sandy Wells, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Specialist Dr. Rubal Patel, and Southwell President and CEO Chris Dorman, along with Chief Nursing Officer Tonia Garrett. They all shared heartfelt memories and reflections on Merritt’s dedication and professionalism.
Remembering Marguerite Merritt
Merritt was remembered as a dedicated clinician who exemplified selflessness. Colleagues described her as skilled, kind, and always ready to assist others. According to TRMC’s press release, “Marguerite was known for always putting patients first, exemplifying a life of serving others.” This sentiment resonated deeply with those who had the privilege of working alongside her.
The ceremony served not only to honor Merritt’s legacy but also to inspire current and future healthcare workers to commit to the same level of care and compassion she demonstrated throughout her career. Her impact on the TRMC community and the lives of countless patients will not be forgotten.
