13-Year-Old Kelly Goodnow Wins Pickleball World Championship
BREAKING: In an exhilarating showdown, 13-year-old Kelly Goodnow from the Valley has just been crowned the 2024 Pickleball World Champion, capturing the singles title at the Carvana PPA World Championships held in Dallas, Texas. This remarkable achievement underscores the explosive growth of pickleball, with nearly 20 million players engaging in the sport across the U.S. this year.
Goodnow’s victory is a testament to her relentless dedication, as she has only been playing for just over a year. “I’m on the court maybe 5 or 6 days a week, so most days I’m definitely on the court,” she stated. Her journey began when her mother, Erin Goodnow, introduced her to the game after attending a clinic. “When she convinced me to try, I fell in love with the sport too,” Kelly shared, highlighting the immediate passion that ignited her rise to the top.
In the final match, Goodnow exhibited incredible resilience, overcoming a daunting score of 2-8 in game three against top seed Jing Robinson. “I had to tell myself to keep fighting, keep digging, keep going for it and I did and I came out with a win,” she recalled. Her father, James Goodnow, expressed immense pride, stating, “I seriously had a tear come out of my eye, because I know how hard Kelly has worked. It was an awesome moment.”
The Goodnow family is brimming with excitement as Kelly prepares to transition to professional play. With her coach, Ashlee Candelari, by her side, she is set to compete in her first pro qualifier event soon. “We’re extremely excited, and that kind of will set the tone for the rest of the year and yeah, break into the pro scene,” Candelari noted.
Kelly’s achievements are not just limited to her championship title; she has also secured sponsorships with Proton Sports and SParms, showcasing her rapid ascent in the sport. “I’m sponsored by Proton Sports. They make amazing paddles and then SParms – these arm sleeves… so great,” Goodnow remarked, highlighting her growing status in pickleball.
As she trains diligently in her own backyard, Goodnow is becoming one of the sport’s breakout young stars, captivating audiences with her fierce determination and skill. “It’s surreal to me that I’m doing this,” she reflected. “I’m so new to the sport, but I’m having the best time and I’m just glad to be along for the ride.”
This victory is not only a personal triumph for Kelly but also a beacon of inspiration for young athletes everywhere. As she gears up for her first pro event, all eyes will be on this rising star from the Valley. Congratulations to Kelly Goodnow on her incredible achievement, and best of luck as she embarks on this exciting new chapter in her pickleball career!
