Remembering Bill Whiting: A Life of Compassion and Adventure

William (Bill) Whiting, a cherished member of his family and community, passed away on October 5, 2025, due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. He was 77 years old. Bill is survived by his wife, Kate, his sister, Maggie, his niece, Stacie, her husband, Loren, and their two sons, Jack and Luke. He leaves behind a legacy of love and friendship, remembered fondly by family, friends, and colleagues.

Born in Pennsylvania on August 9, 1948, Bill moved to California many years later, eventually settling in Santa Cruz around 1993. After his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s in 2019, he initially managed to remain at home for four years, thanks in large part to his dedicated caregiver, Lupe. Her support allowed him to live comfortably in his familiar environment for a longer period than might have otherwise been possible.

As his condition progressed, Bill transitioned to Westwind Memory Care in Santa Cruz, where he received compassionate care from the staff. His family consistently praised the level of attention he received, reflecting the kindness and commitment of those who looked after him during his final years.

Bill had a fulfilling career as a Rehabilitation Counselor, dedicating his life to providing support and vocational services to individuals with disabilities. His work was marked by a deep sense of empathy and a genuine desire to help others thrive.

Life in Bonny Doon and Sailing Adventures

For many years, Bill and Kate enjoyed life on several acres in Bonny Doon, California. This home became a sanctuary filled with love for family and their dogs. Kate continues to reside there, cherishing the memories they created together.

Bill was an adventurous spirit who frequently sailed in the Caribbean with his long-time friend and Penn State fraternity brother, Jim Diebold. The memories of those sailing trips are among his fondest, filled with camaraderie and joy.

The family expresses special gratitude to Kate’s relatives for their ongoing support during Bill’s illness. His close friends, including Andy Pereira, Gene Stymiest, Dan Strom, and Dave Witteveen, made regular visits to Westwind, creating cherished moments captured in videos. One poignant memory includes Dan playing “Happy Birthday” on the harmonica for Bill during one of his last celebrations.

A Community’s Support and Fond Farewell

The community rallied around Bill during his six-year journey with dementia. A heartfelt thank you is extended to friends like Barb Stymiest, Richard Huffman, An Brunelle, and Linda Stevenson for their support and visits to Kate during this challenging time.
