Eagles Fans Rally Behind Young Cancer Patient’s Journey
A wave of support from Philadelphia Eagles fans is uplifting 25-year-old Christian Johnico as he battles stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The aggressive cancer has left him reliant on assistance for daily activities and struggling with severe pain. Johnico, who lives in Durant, Oklahoma, took to Reddit in late October to share his diagnosis and to seek connections with fellow Eagles fans, hoping for tickets to a game.
His post generated a remarkable response, with over 430 comments from fans who shared their own cancer experiences and offered encouragement. “Oh my Lord, man, I cried all day long after I got the responses to that post,” Johnico told NJ Advance Media. “I had no idea I would get so many replies. The support has truly been overwhelming.”
As Johnico undergoes his second round of chemotherapy, he faces significant physical challenges. The cancer has weakened his hip bone, making it difficult for him to walk without a walker or wheelchair. Despite these struggles, the encouragement from the Eagles community has fostered a newfound sense of hope. Johnico finds motivation in the team’s resilience and draws strength from the stories shared by other fans facing similar health battles.
Johnico has been a devoted Eagles fan since 2005, when his aunts introduced him to the team during their Super Bowl matchup against the New England Patriots. Although he has never attended a game in Philadelphia, he is hopeful that will change. Inspired by the response to his Reddit post, an Eagles season ticket holder has offered him tickets to their Week 18 game against the Washington Commanders or any game of his choice for the next season. “It would change my entire life,” Johnico remarked.
Support has also extended beyond emotional encouragement. Fans have contributed to Johnico’s GoFundMe campaign, which aims to raise funds for his medical expenses. As of now, the campaign has garnered $5,337 of the $7,500 goal. “F— CANCER. You got my support from Louisiana. Much love and Go birds,” wrote one donor, showcasing the camaraderie among Eagles supporters.
Johnico’s journey has not been without pain. His initial chemotherapy round left him nauseous and fatigued, and doctors have warned that symptoms may intensify during his ongoing treatment. Yet, he reflects on the kindness from the Eagles community as a vital source of strength. “Everyone around you, they don’t really know how it feels unless they’ve been through it,” he explained. It is this sense of isolation that makes the support from his new-found community all the more significant.
With a hopeful eye towards recovery, Johnico looks back fondly on his favorite Eagles memories. The team’s Super Bowl win in 2017 remains a standout moment for him, especially the electrifying plays by former quarterback Carson Wentz and the legendary Malcolm Jenkins. He is determined to create new memories, ideally celebrating another Super Bowl victory this season.
Eagles kicker Jake Elliott emphasized the importance of providing hope and distraction to fans undergoing challenges. “Any way to take your mind off of the struggle you’re going through is what we want to do,” he stated when discussing the impact of the team’s efforts.
As Johnico anticipates completing his sixth treatment cycle in February, he remains optimistic about entering remission and cherishing the bond he has formed with the Eagles community. “If you’re going through the same thing, all I can say is keep fighting,” he advised others facing similar struggles. “Lean into your support system. It’s helped me a lot, and I’m sure it’ll help you too.”
Through the highs and lows of his journey, Johnico finds solace in the unwavering support of those who share his passion for the Eagles, proving that even in the darkest times, a sense of community can shine brightly.
