UPDATE: A significant fire has erupted atop the ore dock in Duluth, igniting urgent response efforts from local fire crews. The Duluth Fire Department confirmed they received reports of a structure fire at the Canadian National Railway ore docks located on the 200 block of 37th Avenue West just before noon on July 15, 2023.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a maintenance shed “fully involved in fire” on Dock 6, an active facility crucial for loading ships with taconite pellets. This dock, built in 1918, extends nearly half a mile into St. Louis Bay, making it a vital part of the local shipping infrastructure.

Fire crews from four fire stations swiftly responded, containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to the surrounding ore docks. No injuries have been reported, thanks to the quick actions of the fire department and assistance from Canadian National staff, who helped secure a water source. A fire truck also drew additional water from the bay to combat the flames.

The estimated damage to the shed stands at approximately $60,000. The Duluth Fire Marshal’s office is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Residents and businesses in the Lincoln Park neighborhood are relieved no injuries occurred, but the incident highlights the risks associated with operations at active shipping facilities. As investigations continue, authorities urge the community to stay informed about safety protocols in the area.

Watch for updates as the situation develops and more details on the investigation are released. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in industrial areas.
