Hawaii Police Urge Drivers to Follow “Move Over Law” Now
UPDATE: The Hawaii Police Department is urgently reminding drivers of the critical “Move Over Law” during National Crash Responders Safety Week, which runs from November 17 to 24. Authorities stress that this law is vital for the safety of first responders working on dangerous roadways.
As emergency vehicles respond to calls with flashing lights, drivers are legally required to slow down and, when safe, shift lanes to provide a safe passage. This essential protocol protects police, fire crews, EMS, and other emergency personnel from potential harm. The Hawaii Police Department emphasizes that adherence to the law is not optional; it is a crucial safety measure.
According to the stipulations of HRS 291C-27, drivers must reduce their speed and, if possible, move to an adjacent lane when an emergency vehicle is present. This directive applies not only to police and fire vehicles but also to EMS, Ocean Safety units, Freeway Service Patrol, tow trucks, and specific state and county vehicles.
“Slowing down and moving over gives first responders the space they need to work safely,” stated Torey Keltner, Traffic Services Program Manager. He highlighted the ongoing risks faced by responders, citing recent incidents where officers were injured due to non-compliance with the law.
In light of these dangers, the Hawaii Police Department has confirmed that enforcement of the Move Over Law will be strict. Officers will actively stop drivers who fail to comply with these vital regulations. The department urges all motorists to remain vigilant and cautious around emergency personnel, as the safety of the entire community is at stake.
“Please be mindful when you see emergency vehicles working in our community. We want everyone to get home safe,” Keltner implored, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in ensuring road safety.
As National Crash Responders Safety Week progresses, the Hawaii Police Department is calling on all drivers to take immediate action. Awareness and compliance with the Move Over Law are essential to safeguard the lives of those who risk theirs to help others. Drivers are reminded that their actions on the road can have life-or-death consequences for first responders and the public alike.
Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue to monitor compliance and raise awareness about this critical safety issue.
