U.S. Counties Reveal Where Residents Enjoy the Longest Lives
Life expectancy in the United States has experienced a significant decline in recent years, dropping from an average of 78.8 years in 2019 to 77.0 years in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This downward trend continued into 2021, with people born in that year expected to live over half a year less than those born just two years earlier. The declines have been attributed primarily to the COVID-19 pandemic and an increase in “deaths of despair,” which include incidents of cirrhosis, accidental overdoses, and suicides.
Despite these troubling statistics, some areas in the United States report higher life expectancies, driven by healthier lifestyles and various socioeconomic factors. According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, an individual born today in the U.S. is still not projected to live as long as someone born in 2019. However, the average life expectancy in certain counties exceeds national averages, showcasing a more optimistic picture.
Counties with the Longest Life Expectancies
Using data from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute’s County Health Rankings and Roadmaps program, 24/7 Wall St. identified counties where residents enjoy exceptionally long lives. The analysis ranked counties based on average life expectancy at birth, demonstrating that in some regions, people can expect to live for over 94 years.
Among the top counties, life expectancy ranges from 83 years to over 94 years, with residents in these areas living anywhere from 5.5 to 16.7 years longer than the national average. Factors contributing to these higher life expectancies include lower rates of obesity, decreased smoking prevalence, and increased physical activity. Additionally, many of these counties boast higher median household incomes, enhancing access to healthcare and nutritious food.
Pitkin County, Colorado, topped the list with an average life expectancy of 94.2 years, which is 16.7 years higher than the national average. The county features a low adult obesity rate of 21.1% and a smoking rate of 9.1%, both significantly below national averages. Furthermore, the median household income in Pitkin County is $109,268, providing residents with better access to healthcare services.
Following closely is Mono County, California, where the average life expectancy is 93.6 years. With an adult obesity rate of 29.1% and a median household income of $82,973, residents here also enjoy an overall healthier lifestyle.
Summit County, Colorado, ranks third with an average life expectancy of 92.4 years. The county benefits from a low adult obesity rate of 22.7% and a median household income of $105,135, highlighting the impact of economic factors on health outcomes.
Other notable counties include:
– San Juan County, Washington, with an average life expectancy of 87.4 years and a median household income of $86,442.
– San Miguel County, Colorado, where residents live an average of 86.5 years, supported by a median income of $94,927.
Factors Influencing Health and Longevity
The disparities in life expectancy across different counties underline the importance of lifestyle choices and socioeconomic conditions. Counties with higher life expectancies typically exhibit lower obesity rates and reduced smoking prevalence. For instance, counties such as New York County, New York, and Dukes County, Massachusetts, also report above-average life expectancies, attributable to a combination of healthy behaviors and better access to healthcare.
In New York County, the average life expectancy is 83.0 years, with an obesity rate of 21.2% and a median household income of $100,869. Meanwhile, Dukes County residents enjoy an average life expectancy of 83.1 years, with similar socioeconomic advantages.
Economic conditions play a critical role in health outcomes. In many of the counties with the longest life expectancies, residents are more likely to have health insurance, which can significantly improve access to necessary medical care. The majority of the counties listed report higher annual incomes than the national average, allowing residents to afford healthier food options and wellness resources.
In conclusion, while average life expectancy in the United States has declined recently, certain counties demonstrate that healthy lifestyle choices, economic stability, and access to healthcare can foster longer lives. The findings underscore the critical nature of public health initiatives and the need for targeted efforts to enhance health outcomes across the nation.
