Max Verstappen Triumphs in Las Vegas, Lando Norris Expands Lead

Max Verstappen claimed victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday night, overtaking championship leader Lando Norris early in the race and maintaining his lead throughout. The event, held on the iconic Las Vegas Strip, showcased thrilling performances from the Formula 1 drivers, with cars reaching speeds exceeding 215 miles per hour.

This race marked the third consecutive year of Formula 1 action in Las Vegas, and despite finishing second, Norris benefited in the championship standings. He extended his lead over teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place. Norris now holds a total of 408 points, while Piastri has 378 points. Verstappen’s victory brings him to 366 points, placing him third in the standings.

“Simply lovely, that!” Verstappen exclaimed over team radio after crossing the finish line. With only two Grand Prix remaining in the 2025 season, the competition remains fierce, with races scheduled in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The Qatar event will feature a shortened “sprint” race, allowing for a maximum of 58 points still available for drivers.

In a post-race interview, Verstappen remarked on the championship race, stating, “It’s still a big gap. The upcoming weekends we’ll again try to win the race, and at the end of Abu Dhabi we’ll see where we end up.”

Norris, who started from pole position, faced challenges early in the race. After an aggressive defensive maneuver in the opening corners, he lost two positions, allowing Verstappen and George Russell to pass. Although Norris managed to overtake Russell later, he could not close the gap to Verstappen and had to adjust his pace towards the end due to car issues. Russell ultimately finished third.

Reflecting on his start, Norris admitted, “I just braked too late. It was my eff-up. I just wanted to put on a show, right? That’s why we’re in Vegas!”

Economic Impact and Celebrity Presence

Local leaders expressed hope that the race weekend would provide a significant boost to the Las Vegas economy, which has faced challenges this year due to high costs and declining tourism. The previous year’s Grand Prix generated an economic impact of approximately $934 million, according to estimates.

U.S. Representative Steven Horsford, who represents parts of Las Vegas, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “It’s a very important event. And I fully support all of our special events. We’re not just the entertainment capital, we’re the entertainment and sports capital.”

Formula 1 aims to strengthen its presence in the United States, having secured races in Miami and Las Vegas, in addition to the longstanding Grand Prix in Austin. Notably, F1 has signed a five-year broadcasting deal with Apple, set to replace ESPN next year.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix attracted numerous celebrities, including musicians Beyoncé and Jay-Z, actors Ben Affleck, Michael Douglas, and Naomi Campbell, as well as NBA stars Magic Johnson and Jimmy Butler. The actors were seen enjoying the event from the Ferrari garage, where Hamilton took Beyoncé on a hot lap before the race, according to a team spokesperson.

Challenges and Team Dynamics

The qualifying session on Friday faced disruption due to rain, testing the skills of all 20 drivers as they navigated the slippery track. Norris, who secured pole position, described the experience: “You’re just trying to keep it on the track. Not crash. Not take yourself out.” He expressed hope that fans could someday experience the thrill and unpredictability of driving an F1 car.

The Las Vegas paddock buzzed with internal dynamics among various teams, particularly McLaren. Piastri faced questions regarding a social media post that quoted former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, suggesting favoritism towards Norris. Piastri later clarified that the repost was unintentional, stating, “I woke up this morning and saw it. So I don’t know, maybe I accidentally did it.”

Meanwhile, Ferrari’s drivers reacted to recent comments from chairperson John Elkann, who advised them to “talk less and focus on driving.” Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton humorously remarked about media obligations, asserting, “I wake up thinking about it. And I go to sleep thinking about it.”

Ferrari currently sits fourth in the constructors’ championship standings, closely trailing behind Mercedes and Red Bull. The team is eager to improve after a winless season to date, with Hamilton managing to progress from starting in 20th position to finish within the top ten.
