Chicago Bears Consider New Stadium Options, Including Indiana
The Chicago Bears are actively exploring options for a new stadium outside of Illinois, as the team faces significant legislative obstacles in their efforts to build in Arlington Heights. In a strongly worded open letter, Kevin Warren, the Bears’ President and CEO, expressed frustration over the lack of support from Illinois lawmakers, citing an urgent need for a viable plan to secure a world-class venue for the team.
As the Bears prepare for the final stretch of the regular season, they currently lead the NFC North division, providing a backdrop of excitement for fans. However, Warren’s message to state officials was stark and clear. He emphasized the team’s commitment to investing over $2 billion—one of the largest private investments in both state and NFL history—without seeking taxpayer dollars for the stadium itself. Instead, the Bears requested a commitment for essential local infrastructure and reasonable property tax stability to help secure financing.
Warren highlighted that despite months of collaboration with Illinois leaders, the team has encountered repeated roadblocks. He stated, “Our efforts have been met with no legislative partnership,” which has now prompted the Bears to consider expanding their search beyond Arlington Heights, including options in northwest Indiana.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker‘s spokesperson responded to the Bears’ announcement, characterizing the potential move as a “startling slap in the face” to loyal fans. The spokesperson reiterated the Governor’s desire for the team to remain in Chicago, acknowledging that while the Bears are a private entity, any business development should not come at the expense of taxpayers.
The Bears have called Chicago home for over a century, and Warren reaffirmed the team’s dedication to the city and its community. He asserted, “Our goal is clear: build a world-class football team that has a world-class stadium worthy of our world-class fans.” This includes providing a venue that meets the championship standard the players and coaches strive for.
Warren’s letter outlined the potential benefits of the stadium project, including thousands of jobs, year-round entertainment, and significant revenue for the state. He underscored the importance of having stable timelines and predictable processes, stating, “For a project of this scale, uncertainty has significant consequences.”
As the Bears continue their search for a new stadium site, they remain committed to engaging with the community and exploring all viable pathways to secure a future that meets the expectations of their passionate fanbase. The ongoing developments in this stadium saga highlight the critical intersection of sports, business, and community support in the heart of Chicago.
