Community Mourns the Loss of Electronics Engineer Ronald Szpila

Ronald M. Szpila, a respected electronics engineer and beloved community member from Montague, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on February 15, 2026, at the age of 79. Born in Adams, Massachusetts, to Julian and Lucille Szpila, he was the eldest of five siblings and a devoted family man.

Ronald Szpila married his childhood friend, Annette St. Hilaire, 56 years ago. Together, they embraced life with a spirit of adventure, embarking on numerous projects and travels. Their strong bond and shared experiences were central to Ron’s life, providing him with profound joy and fulfillment.

A dedicated educator, Ron spent his career inspiring students both inside and outside the classroom. He had a unique ability to highlight the small wonders of everyday life, fostering curiosity and appreciation in those around him. His passion for learning extended beyond his profession; he was an avid fan of rock music, enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, and had a love for photography.

Ron was also an outdoor enthusiast, finding happiness in tending to his lawn, cutting down trees, and moving rocks. His genuine nature shone through in his interactions with strangers, as he often sought to uplift their spirits, even if he stumbled over his words. Family stories, embellished over time, were a treasured part of his conversations, reflecting his love for storytelling.

As a father, Ron was deeply committed to his children, Michelle Wright and Robert Szpila. He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, affectionately known as Dziadziu. His family will remember him for his unwavering support and love, as well as his enduring spirit despite the challenges that came with aging.

Ron is survived by his wife, Annette Szpila; his siblings, Cynthia Daunais-Lawrence, Jeanne Millette, and Steven Szpila; his children, Michelle and Robert; his grandchildren—including Annie Bright, Emily Wright, and Ryan Szpila; and his great-grandchildren, Emil Bright and Simona Bright. He was predeceased by his sister, Denise Desanty.

Memorial Services Scheduled to Honor Szpila’s Life

A Memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, located at 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls. Following the service, burial will occur at the family’s convenience.

Visitation hours will be held on Friday evening, February 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, situated at 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the Montague Center Fire Department Association, 28 Old Sunderland Rd., Montague, MA 01351, or the Montague Police Association, 180 Turnpike Rd., Montague, MA 01351.
