Iconic Sand Dollar Social Club Listed for $3 Million in Folly Beach
FOLLY BEACH — The Sand Dollar Social Club, a well-known establishment among locals and tourists alike, is officially on the market for the first time in over 40 years, with a listing price of $3 million. This mossy-green building, situated at 7 Center St. at the corner of W. Ashley Avenue, has been a staple of the Folly Beach entertainment district since its current structure was built in 1981.
Owned by Richard E. Weatherford since its purchase for just $37,000, the Sand Dollar has become synonymous with live music, pool tables, and a welcoming environment for motorcycle enthusiasts, particularly Harley Davidson owners. The property is being marketed by Dunes Properties, which highlights its significance as a “piece of Folly Beach history in the heart of downtown.”
Local Sentiment on the Sale
Reactions from the community have been swift and heartfelt. Members of the Follitics Facebook group expressed their sadness over the listing, with comments reflecting a sense of loss. One user lamented, “Folly is officially dead,” while another remarked, “Where will the four horsemen go now?” These sentiments indicate the bar’s deep roots in local culture.
Another commenter noted the shift in atmosphere following the passing of a beloved figure associated with the venue, stating, “The Sand Dollar as we loved it pretty much ended with the passing of Big Richard.” Despite current management striving to maintain the venue’s legacy, some locals feel that the essence of the bar has changed significantly.
Future Prospects for the Property
The listing indicates that there are “several options” for redevelopment. Potential new owners have the flexibility to maintain the current commercial setup on Center Street while adding residential units at the back of the lot. Alternatively, they could convert the property into a fully commercial first floor with residential space above.
Management of the property, overseen by Keith McCann of Dunes Properties, was unavailable for comment during a recent visit by a reporter on October 16, 2023. The future of the Sand Dollar Social Club remains uncertain, but its rich history and community significance are undeniable, marking it as a prominent landmark in Folly Beach.
