A significant recall involving frozen fried rice and other Asian-themed products has been announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The recall affects 16 products distributed by Ajinomoto Foods, which include items sold at Trader Joe’s and Kroger. The potential contamination with foreign objects, specifically glass, prompted this extensive action.

Initially launched on February 19, 2024, the recall has expanded to include nearly 37 million pounds of various products, according to USDA officials. The contaminated items were produced between October 21, 2024, and February 26, 2026, and have best buy dates ranging from February 28, 2026, to August 19, 2027. The brands affected include Ajinomoto, Kroger, Ling Ling, Tai Pei, and Trader Joe’s.

Health Risks and Consumer Guidance

The USDA’s announcement on March 3, 2024, indicated that the agency received multiple consumer complaints regarding glass found in the products. Investigations revealed that the carrots in the packaging were likely the source of contamination. In light of these findings, consumers are advised not to consume the affected products, which should either be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The recall extends to specific items sold at Trader Joe’s. This includes popular frozen meals that may pose health risks due to the potential presence of glass shards. Customers are urged to check their freezers for any products that match the recall criteria.

Additional Recalls and Retailer Responses

On the same day, Costco notified its members of a separate recall involving Shoyu Ramen Bowls, also for potential glass contamination. These products have best buy dates from May 2, 2026, to July 5, 2027. Customers with these items can return them to Costco for a complete refund.

For those looking to identify affected products, Trader Joe’s has provided guidance on their website, allowing consumers to locate store locations and further information. While there are no Kroger locations in Delaware, there are two Harris Teeter stores owned by Kroger that may carry similar frozen products.

As this recall unfolds, it serves as an important reminder for consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing frozen foods. Checking product dates and being aware of recalls can help ensure safety in our kitchens.
